Liverpool 4-4 Arshavin

BBC have done a throwback to that game in 2009. Still one of the best games I’ve ever seen, alongside probably the best individual performance from an Arsenal player in memory. That season I’m sure we also drew 4-4 with Spurs by throwing the game away, so that team could certainly score and concede at will.

Arshavin didn’t really do much else. But he took 4 shots and all went in, it really was incredible. When he scored his fourth, I think everyone watching at the time knew it wasn’t the winner despite it being scored in the 90th min or around that mark and the score reading 4-3 Arsenal. The doubt proved to be right when Liverpool scored pretty much straight from kick off.

Torres really tormented the team in that period. Painful memories of Senderos unable to contain him in CL only a season earlier were and still are bright.

Arsenal vs Liverpool fixtures over the decades have been some of the best PL has seen. Some real thrashings/upsets as well as this draw. With neither team particularly doing well this season, it may not live up to expectations. However both do posses quality (especially Liverpool) to turn the game in their favour this weekend.

In terms of what is supposed to be the top level of the game, that match was, perhaps, the least 'footbally' game of football that I've ever seen.

Dreadful stuff for professionals to be involved in.

Everyone was thinking how special a player Arshavin was at that point. Was one of the star players at the Euros and then came to Arsenal and started his career on fire.

Another one of those players who was briefly the best player in the league but couldn't sustain it for more than a few months like fellow Arsenal players Nasri and Ramsey.

Arsenal were awful but everytime Arshavin shot it went bloody in. Arsenal had four shots on target and four goals, were pinned back most of the game but countered well and capitalised on a couple of silly defensive errors.

What a weirdly passive aggressive comment.

I was at the game, walked out when he scored his 4th and missed the Benayoun equaliser.

I wasn't even having a go at Arsenal, just making the observation and comparison because it's interesting they all happened to be in the same team together.

Some interesting revisionist history regarding Arshavin's time at Arsenal. Either that or everyone commenting has completely forgotten that there was big, fat, good reason why he looked awesome at first but after a while only looked bang average. Give you all a clue, it had something to do with a certain 6 months a season cripple who arguably obstructed or damaged the career of several of his teammates with his annual absence/return merry-go-round.

Arshavin was a cracking player but sadly for him he was a little too agreeable to Wenger playing him out of position. AFC fans should be sat now, still in awe of the badass LW we had at the time. But sadly, thanks to AW and Broken Boy-Persie, Arshavin is instead remember for being mediocre. Purely because he put in workhorse performance after workhorse performance up front instead of lighting up the wing like he was meant to. He was one who needed to stand up to the manager, was just a little too nice and agreeable for his own good and paid a big price for it.

Honestly despise the accuracy of this sentence. Brings back some truly horrific memories of bottle jobbing and nappy wetting that that era of football was completely drenched in.

I remember van persie scoring a 90th minute penalty (oddly against liverpool too), and we conceded a penalty ourselves in the 107th minute. Only arsenal.

Sorry, we scored in the 98th minute, then conceded in the 102nd minute.
