Weird contradictions

Firstly, very frustrating result yesterday and very disappointing to drop points yet again. 15 points dropped from winning positions is pretty shocking. Under Mourinho, we seem immune to overtaking Chelsea when given the chance. Three times since he's arrived, we've had the chance to overtake them and into the top 4 and we've blown it.

I'm not quite sure how we're still in the top 4 race after our slump earlier this season, but another opportunity missed.

Secondly, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram need to do more to stamp out the disgusting and vile abuse sent to players after games, the latest being directed towards Sanchez. Makes a mockery of the government's idea that the UK is a model for race relations. I wouldn't blame players for coming off these platforms, because how can you eradicate it completely without also preventing sub-human, ignorant, thick as pig**** keyboard warriors from having phones and computers in the first place. Very depressing state of affairs and a worrying trend, picking up since lockdown.

Anyway, that aside, to the main point of this article, which is the odd contradictions at play with us this season. Despite being poor and inconsistent at times this season, and giving away so many winning positions, we are still only a couple of points off the top 4.

Also, despite a shaky defence, only three teams (Chelsea, Villa and City) have conceded fewer than our 32.

There has also been criticism levelled at our style of play - fairly at times - and a caution-first, pragmatic approach from Mourinho, but only the current top 3 have scored more goals than us. As such, we have the joint third best GD in the league.

As ever, though, it's a case of nearly but not quite. We could have been challenging much higher up if we didn't keep giving away points. We could have scored more, we could have conceded less. If, buts and maybes.

The stats also don't lie in the number of defeats we've suffered (9) and the games we've drawn, which is too much to be challenging. In a weird quirk, we currently have the exact same league record as Liverpool and have scored the same amount of goals, but have conceded four fewer, hence us sitting above them on GD currently.

Yesterday was a real chance to get into the top 4 for the first time since Jan and it was typical of this season that we blew it. I still don't have huge amounts of faith in us doing it when it matters, but none of the teams competing for that 4th spot (us, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton and West Ham) are flawless or infallible, so it's likely to go right down to the wire.

When I saw the title I thought this article was gonna be about Sandy’s views on Spurs

Don't know if it's true but a lot of papers are saying the players are fed up with Jose and him telling them there not good enough for the top 4.

Sounds like his lost the dressing room.

Palmers, To be honest this forum is seriously going downhill. It seems that any supporter who supports the current manager, gets ridiculed and ostricised. Why are supporters not allowed different opinions on the way our club is run? I just don`t get it.

Something not right with the board right now, where nobody outside the Jose out view is allowed a platform.

Probably not Edward, just a load of newspaper rubbish I suspect. Unfortunately most of our supporters are so gullible, they believe anything the rags tell them.

the league is a joke. we are a very poor football team, and the fact that after yet another fack up this weekend we are still only one game away from the top 4 is a disgrace. standard of the league this year is awful

Agreed, one of the poorest Prems ever.

I would argue it is one of the best PL seasons ever, there are no easy games anymore, no guaranteed points unless you are Penited or Varpool. It just goes to show how far City are ahead of the rest. In years gone by we were guaranteed points off certain clubs because they were so bad, these days (pre covid) even the bottom clubs have lots of money to spend.

A few ITK's are saying Jose will be gone in the summer, Naglesmann is wanted and he wants to come but not until the summer. They seem certain...
