The case (you linked) was in regard to LFC trying to protect their brand from fake/counterfeit/unofficial products/services, which Arsenal did a few years ago:

Aside from the fact that I highly doubt any court would uphold an attempt to prevent Liverpool using the name, why would the council want to anyway?

Every game played to a worldwide audience of potentitally hundreds of millions of people would carry the name of the city. Free publicity just doesn't get any better than that.

So Man United become “United” - everyone calls them that anyway, Man City becomes “Citeeeeh” everyone calls them that anyway, Spurs can stay as Spurs, Arsenal can be the Gooners, and Liverpool the Reds. It might affect Chelsea, but they will work it out
