Leicester: what a season

FA Cup and likely 3rd, or at least top 4.

What a season they have had.

How have they gone from being a yo-yo club between the PL and Championship to being PL winners a few years ago, a regular top 4 side and now also cup winners?

Good recruitment? That's part of the picture. What else?

I'd like to know as my family support Norwich and we dearly wish they'd 'do a Leicester' and stop being too good for the Championship, but too poor for the PL.

I agree with most of that other than a regular top 4 side. They haven’t finished top 4 since they won it.

Really hope they finish the job this time.

Fair point well made.
I'm convinced they'll get top 4.
I can't see them losing their players in the summer, too. What are their priority areas? I imagine they'll need someone to help up front as Vardy is getting on and Iheanacho needs someone else up top to play with as he can't lead the line by himself.

Can see them being in for Tammy Abraham. Looks like they are signing Soumare the Lille midfielder. Meant to be a very good player. Sky had linked him with us and Chelsea not too long ago.

'Doing a Leicester' is no different to 'doing a Chelsea', or 'doing a Man City'.

Start off by running your middling club into the ground.

Then get a billionaire sugardaddy happy enough to write off £150m of prior club debt in addition to paying the club purchase price.

Then, get the billionaire owners to approve a spending spree leading to over £150m of cumulative annual losses in the first 3-4 seasons. And keep going until your cumulative losses over 10 years are well past £230m.

Who cares? The billionaire owners can always write it off by converting it into more equity.

But don't forget to dress it up as a thriving business by authorising a couple of big-name player sales every now and then (Kante, Mahrez, Maguire, Chillwell). If you play your cards right, you might even get to shut your critics up with a couple of profitable financial years.

A bit of luck plays a part as always. Really like Leicester as a club, one shot on target would not be enough normally to win an fa cup though. And obviously being a mm offside, luck plays a huge part. But you have to be in it to win it and Leicester have that mentality and apply themselves imo more than Everton and spurs for example who should be doing more and treating these competitions with the respect they deserve.

Brought in a good manager. That is the main thing. Rodgers is and always had been a good manager and I am glad he has proven his misguided critics wrong.

They’re an interesting case study for sure. They may not finish top four still but despite all the hype being made about the top four ‘race’ it is very much in their favour. It would be very against the odds for them to drop out now.

I believe they have done well reinvesting fees they got for Chilwell, Kante, Mahrez and Maguire all over the pitch. They have a number of smart buys that contribute each season. Some clearly grow into the role over 6-18 months, but it does show they have a strong scouting system to eye out this talent. Justin, Ndidi, Tielemans, Soyuncu, Castagne, Maddison, Ricardo, now Fofana and Iheanacho. It is quite rare for a club to make so many tangibly good signings in what just 3-4 years? Even now they’ve basically completed the signing of Soumare from title winning Lille for just £23m. There’s not one big statement marquee signing that clubs are often pressured into recently, but instead lots of good scouting decisions all over the pitch.

Rodgers is also a perfect fit for them. He’s a very good manager and still doesn’t get all the credit he deserves. Unlikable, maybe, but probably one of the top managers in the PL. It is rare for a manager to objectively do a good job at every single one of his appointments, in fact he’s arguably overachieved for each one of his appointments. Swansea promoted and became a mid table side. Liverpool, title challenging and probably a slice of luck away from winning. Celtic, treble treble.

At Leicester, it is very understated that he has got them challenging for top four with lots of injury issues to key players, in particular this season. Literally all of Leicester’s most important players have spent at least what about 4-6 weeks off this season. Vardy, Maddison, Barnes, Ndidi, Ricardo, Justin, Evans, Soyuncu. Some of the XIs he’s had to put out look like they’d finish 10th-17th.

They still have a massive issue/challenge to replace Vardy who is still so key to them, but obviously at some point will decline. Maybe he is already? It’s tough decisions and judgements like that, that is such a test.

I just checked his wiki to fact check my post lol, and tbf some corrections for my part on Rodgers. He did do kinda average in short stints for Watford and Reading before he joined Swansea over 10 years ago. And technically he of course didn’t complete the treble treble with Celtic, leaving a few months before the end of their third season

Just looked at the fixtures and a good chance Leicester won't finish top four.
