Afternoon all.
Wanted to gather thoughts from the more knowledgeable and articulate folk on here regarding the current pandemic situation here.
Circulation of the disease is currently very low in England at around 5.4 per 100,000 which is good news, aside of a spike today deaths have been hovering in single figures every day and we are vaccinating north of half a million people daily.
50% of the adult population are now as protected as they are ever going to be from covid and 75% have one vaccine.
So why the panic all the time? It seems to be that whenever a variation of the disease is discovered our government hit the panic button despite the huge levels of vaccination (which is an even higher percentage amongst the vulnerable) so why is this?
I have this horrible pessimism that we will never get out of this situation (despite America seemingly being able to go back to normal in most states) as new variants will never stop being created.
Is this life forever now or am I too pessimistic?
Over to you knowledgeable people...

The problem is with any covid/sars, the disease mutates, over and over. And the worry is that if it continues to spread/mutate, could result in a variant that is less (or at worst not) effected by the current vaccinations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So does that mean life just changes forever then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, but the pandemic lasts as long as it lasts. Some people seem to have a limit of 1 year before they take to the streets to protest, some 2 years. Everyone has their own inner breaking point but sadly the pandemic is here for as long as it takes for a bit of luck/good judgment from people in charge/less conspiracy theorist idiots on the streets etc to get ahead and stay ahead.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The pandemic may last as long as it lasts but it doesn't mean our Draconian measures to stop it need to last.
Texas and Florida are two great examples where social distancing is dead, masks aren't even obligatory and covid numbers are tumbling.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
wrong
TX n FL r among the highest
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They were yes but they are also 2 of the most populous states.
But also despite having no restrictions whatsoever and a similar vaccination rate to the UK, their case numbers are still declining.
Just throw covid cases Florida into Google and you'll see it immediately.

They’re also not testing people as much as other states so their case numbers are probably much higher.

Both below the US average in tests per capita.
More than 60% more tests undertaken in California than Texas.

I assume by extrapolation you're suggest that the only reason cases are declining is that testing is declining?

No, I'm suggesting that cases aren't rising despite having few or no restrictions.
