Given it is a group chat it pretty much shows that they talk this way all of the time as they quite clearly had no fear of any of the other members telling them to leave it out.

Yeh it could easily be mates taking the p!ss. When you are a close knit group you can get very close to the bone without upsetting each other, but for people that aren't part of that group it seems nasty to them.

Does that make it any better? I'm sure we all have WhatsApp groups where things get pretty dark but I don't think I've ever seen anything close to racism of that level on any of my groups.

It's not for me to say if it is ok. Its for the members of the group to decide that.

The comments on the group can be read as tongue in cheek. They may be an imaginary/pretend divide between the white and black players in that squad. It might be something that they joke about and play on between themselves, when in reality they are a close knit group and these is no divide. And that has been carried on with the England players in jest. I am of course only surmising, but I am reading the messages as having attempted humour in them, but only those in the group will know for sure.

I am not sure its been released who these academy players were so unless i am wrong on that you cannot claim to have any knowledge about who they are, what colour they are and make any sort of judgement about how their humour might work within a group.

It does not read well, obviously, but it is actually so full on it almost comes across as irony.

Throughout the thread I have used the words attempted humour.

And yes, there is a context where that could have been attempted humour. It could have even been black players posting the messages being ironic for all I know. I have no idea who these lads are, what colour they are, what their relationships are like, whether there are black players in the group, what their humour is etc.

So it could be attempted humour, could be out and out racism.

It's not irrelevant at all. If it was meant to be ironic then its not racism. It's mocking racism.

Rumour has it the lad that took the screenshot was Izzy Kaba. He is black. He apparently sent the screenshot to a girl saying look how funny this is and she didn't agree and shared it. If that is the truth then that is exactly what I'm talking about - humour between a group of friends that outsiders don't understand or agree with. But we will see if/when the details come out.
