Leeds Utd v Liverpool Matchday Thread

Here we go............(yes it's early but I've no choice I'm going to Aberdeen tomorrow till Sunday, not sure if I'll be back in time )
Welcome to the (early) Matchday Thread and the visit of Liverpool to Elland Road, both Teams hoping the authorities see sense and lift these bans

Venue...Elland Road...Date...12th Sept...Kick Off...1630hrs

Team News
Leeds United
Stuart Dallas is available for Leeds despite withdrawing from international duty for personal reasons, while Junior Firpo and Mateusz Klich have recovered from Covid-19.

New signing Daniel James could play and Raphinha's ban for not being released to the Brazil squad may yet be lifted.

Liverpool
Liverpool are without the injured Roberto Firmino but Virgil van Dijk and Harvey Elliott are fit.

James Milner has returned to training but is a doubt.

Like Raphinha, Alisson Becker and Fabinho are currently ineligible to play as they weren't allowed to link-up with Brazil's national team, although the situation could change.

Opta stats
After winning both league meetings against Liverpool in 2000-01, Leeds are winless in their last eight against the Reds in the Premier League (D3 L5).
Liverpool have lost just one of their last nine away league games against Leeds (W5 D3), going down 4-3 in November 2000 with Mark Viduka netting all four goals for the Whites.
Liverpool have only failed to score in one of their last 22 meetings with Leeds in all competitions, finding the net in each of their last 15 against the Whites since a goalless draw at Elland Road in April 1999.
After winning their last four games of the 2020-21 campaign, Leeds are without a win so far this season (D2 L1). They've not failed to win any of their first four games to a top-flight campaign since 1958-59 under Bill Lambton.
Leeds are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League home games (W3 D4), their longest run without defeat at Elland Road in the top-flight since a run of 15 in 2001.

There you have it, long time since we beat Liverpool (can Bamford do a Viduka ) massive challenge for us but I think we can nick it 2-1 for me with Paddy and Dallas scoring

I think the energy and the effort is there, just not quite clicking yet, but the opposition we have played have either been of a top standard, or play a way we struggle to deal with anyway.

Newcastle has to be a win, because we need to build some positive momentum. Suspect Ayling will be RCB with Shack in at RB, provided Struijk's ban doesn't get overturned.

Just saw this on the Beeb site..................

The Athletic

The Premier League have clarified to The Athletic that Leeds defender Pascal Strujik was sent off due to “the intensity and endangerment of Harvey Elliott”.

Whether that means an appeal would be pointless I don't know .

High, it might be best for Struijk to not fight this. On replay of his reaction afterward you could tell he was concerned for Elliot and what resulted in the tackle.

Two young lads. Hopefully Elliot makes a full return to fitness. He's a very good player. And as a massive Struijk fan, I hope he's able to mentally get through this.
I don't think he had malicious intent.

Anyway gl for the rest of the season barring AnfieldI think you've not been great so far by your own standards, but can't be judged vs the top teams too harshly. Bielsa clearly not gonna change his ways to play vs them either.

We've lost to two title contenders.

We've got 2 points against two pretty solid established teams.

No point in denying we need a win, however I ain't at panic stations with our situation just yet

Man City/Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool: all light years ahead
of us (and the rest of the Prem). We're a bottom 10 team for sure. Entertaining as hell at times, with the best manager. But, this season's going to be a rollercoaster.

Disagree with the bottom 10 comment.
Season has just started and while I only saw the second half was pleased how we played besides being
A little sloppy with simple passes.
Hope Elliot recovers fully and feel for struijk.
No malice there.
Think we will better last years tally of points and position. No shame in losing to Liverpool, they'll finish first or second. Need to string some wins together starting Friday.

I was very disappointed today. The team seems a shadow of last season’s team. The passing is poor - I lost count how many times Rodrigo lost the ball - and the speed and fluidity of passing isn’t there this season. I am already missing Alioski. He wasn’t perfect but he knew the system and could make things happen. Sorry, but Firpo doesn’t seem like an improvement to me.

I was praising Struijk for winning the ball back, and then he’s sent off!

Our next three games will be dodgy with 3 of our 4 CBs out. Our position in the table is worrying, but more so the fact that the team’s performances are a reflection of where we are.

I thought Firpo was pretty good. Up against the best RW in the world, so writing him off is absolutely ludicrous. He's an improvement on Alioski, but give him some time ffs. Just silly not to.

Can fans like this not be banned? Surely this is equivalent to inciting violence?

I’m not defending any of our fans either. If they were singing Hilsborough songs they should be ashamed and banned also - I never heard anything though but I’m sure Liverpool fans will have videos if it happened.

This definitely happened though:

Struijk has disabled his comments on Instagram beceusse of the abuse being sent at him by Liverpool fans. Feral lot.

And now Elliott has come out and said it was just an accident and not a red card.
