A lot of people out there assume horror has been awful in the modern era. Likely the same people who say modern music has nothing to offer. But there’s plenty out there if you’re willing to do a little work on both accounts.

On Carpenter, Halloween is his masterpiece and always will be, feck The Thing even though I love it too lol
In the Mouth of Madness was weird as feck but good

Hard disagree with this - watched Halloween last weekend and when you take of the nostalgia specs it's aged really badly - honestly the only Thing going for it is old Will Shatner. The Thing and a few others from this era still hold up really well, from the scares to the tension. Also a little disappointed with the lack of Alien in this discussion, again another master piece from this 70s/80s of monster/horror movies.
