Penalty encroachment rule

I will never understand why a penalty has to be retaken if someone if the opposition players encroaches. Especially if the penalty goes wide.

Surely the encroaching player can only benefit if the penalty rebounds back into play. If it goes wide there is no advantage gained at all. Dybala yesterday put his penalty well wide but it was retaken because a Zenit player encroached.

This rule makes no sense.

On a separate note, what a player Chiesa is. A proper winger. Very rare in this modern game.

Well, it’s like the pointless debates about big toes being the only part offside because you either punish all or none because where do you draw the line - 17,16,15yds? When they overtake the penalty taker? When they’re in the taker’s peripheral vision?

It’s a rule.
Rarely enforced.

As a recent example, Auba's goal against Villa. Emi pushed the ball back out into his path and he scored. A defender knowing their gk has a tendency to parry the ball into a particular area could gain an advantage by encroaching and getting to it first. You have to play to the markings on the pitch so the penalty area is the best way to do it and it works for the area the gk can handle the ball as well.

You also need to look at how it would work if you took the rule away. It may not be perfect but its there for a reason and I challenge you to come up with a reasonable and workable alternative.
