Iām planning to get an electric mini at some point early next year. Does anyone on here have experience of owning an electric car and are they as good as they seem at first glance - ie, no need for regular maintenance, no petrol costs (electric is peanuts compared to $100 a week on fuel) etc.
The advertised range for the Mini is 240kms which I guess is hard to actually hit as you probably have to jump through loads of hoops with the car settings to get that but apparently electric car batteries provide better range in warmer countries so might just get near that.
Any electric car experts on here? Advice sought.

use them all the time at work... belive it or not the shiiitty looking bmw i3 has the same pick up as an M4.... fecking like shat off a shovel
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the electric Mini has the same ‘engine’ as the i3.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
7.1seconds 0-60 respectable, but still not as quick as a golf gti, around what a normal Cooper S is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
thats based on the comfort mode, stick it in sports mode and its much quicker
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s probably based on sports mode. As why would you take the spec from not it’s best performance? That makes no sense at all..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
dunno... but i was in an I3 yesterday and hit 60 in under that time
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s because there was no insulate Britain protesters lying in the road
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I did wonder when did they lay those speed humps

There's a guy on Youtube who bought an electric Mini and solar panels/battery the whole works and lives energy cost free most of the year although I think he was not impressed with the range of the Mini. Nigel's the name.

Robb. Would it be possible to fit a massive solar panel on top of your car seeing as it's always sunny in Australia. Or even solar sails. If the wind is with you they could be used to move you forward as well and you'd look terribly cool.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can’t be the only one, Diafol, who has wondered for many years why every car roof isn’t fitted with a photovoltaic.
It would never feed your power unit, but surely enough for lights, in-car electronics, elec doors, windows, ‘n stuff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. As my mum says "ewwww, I don't like the look of it."

I’ve just got a new car, was a gnats chuff from getting an electric (looked at the BMW iX3 I think it was) but in the end decided to stick with hybrid for now. Few friends have them (one has a Tesla, one has a Ford Mach-e) and love them but there are still snags ie battery length of charge and charging times on journeys. I think if your life involves relatively short local and work commutes it’s fine, and if you have a second petrol car for long journeys even better, but if you wanna be doing a lot of longer travelling in them the aren’t quite there yet. I’m gonna give it a few more years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn't think you would go for a soft car that pooves drive ace. Hybrid? Does that mean you like men as well as women? I'd have you as driving an old Volvo estate
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing wrong with a Volvo, I looked at an XC60 and they are very nice. Expensive tho for what you wouldn’t class as a top tier brand, went for the X5 in the end, still awaiting delivert tho, fecking supply chain bollox.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Volvo is definite top tier, amazing tech and amazing looking cars. They’re the most safe and reliable cars out there too, not like some German cars these days (VW group) where the engine light would flash after 100 miles.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vw are solid. I’ve had a few of their group, mechanically been great. Japanese are the best imo for that.
Volvos are quite cool, but aren’t they essentially Fords mechanically?
Plan to keep my gti for a few years then go electric. I don’t believe in renting cars via pcp (don’t kid yourself it ain’t yours), then go electric, but no idea what. Certainly not a mini though

try again... stick it on a charging point in a services or around town on a quick charge
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s the good thing about the mini battery. As it’s quite small it has a very quick charge. I like the concept of going on journeys, popping into McDonald’s for 20/30 mins while it charges and then keep doing stuff like that until I hit my distraction, not needing to worry about changing the oil or the engine overheating etc - the things you worry about with a combination engine car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Buys electric car, drives it to McDonalds
The automotive equivalent of installing a brand new, super-efficient pellet stove and burning lignite in it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
šš I wouldn’t be driving it TO McDonald’s. I just meant that if I was on a road trip and there was a McDonald’s or a Hungry Jacks etc on the way where i could park up and charge my car for 30 mins while I wait then that’s where I’d go. If it was more ethically suitable I’ll eat at a Whole Foods service station while my car charges š

Weight / power ratio.
Solar roll will fix this in theory. A UK start up with proven tech on small scale, light 3mm thick flexible solar panels , 12% efficient currently, could get up to 16% it's certainly enough to help keep the battery charged on and more importantly between journeys (cars spend 95% of their time immobile)
