Bbc have done quite a few good features from that period recently - I read up on the one they did for Real Madrid winger Laurie Cunningham too. Both were before my time, but yeah, harrowing stories.

Great article.
Donadoni was a favourite of mine on Championship Manager 96/97; I always bought him if I was a team such as QPR, battling to get back into the Prem. Donadoni was in his 30s by then.
Gullit- what a warrior. Players had some mentality back then. Some still do.
What an awful atmosphere for that game though. It sounds more like an amphitheatre than a football stadium.

Yes, I’m old enough to remember this and many more similar incidents.
A young Pele being kicked to death in the World Cup was unbelievable.
Keegan and Bremner’s bare-knuckle fist fight was shocking, but amusing.
Any number of tackles by Norman Hunter, Tommy Smith or David Webb. Charitably described by David Coleman in those days as “agricultural.”
But have to say, the Eriksen incident last summer was also brutal, notwithstanding no other player was involved.

I went to Belgrade a couple of years ago.
Extremely inhospitable and Red Star’s stadium wouldn’t look out of place in League 2

And these days, the amount of diving and rilling around is just embarrassing

That Milan side was indeed phenomenal, but they got the luckiest of escapes in Belgrade. When the game was called off the day before, Red Star were 1-0 up with Milan down to 10 men and just half an hour to go. I've no idea why Red Star agreed to replay the game from scratch rather than insist on restarting it where they'd left off.

Just listened to Mark Hateley interview on Open Goal, he was just prior to the Dutchmens arrival, the way he talks about Baresi and Maldini et al and the Milan set up, they were miles ahead of British football.

I read it was their manager who accepted the replay to the bewilderment of his players.
