Rumours have it that Utd are lining up a £50m move for the Scottish midfielder
Rumours I know but an interesting one
An absolute steal at £3m for Villa and one of the most consistent and important players for them
Would Utd fans want him?
50m a bargain or well over priced?
Would be gutted if he left
John McGinn

I prefer rice
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But Declan Rice
Is twice the price
----------------------------------------------------------------------
United are weak in midfield and don't really have an enforcer. Rice would do a better job than McFred on his own and allow United to play another forward thinking midfielder.
McGinn has a good highlight reel due to his low centre of gravity and decent shot, but outside of that he can't pass, isn't the best with positioning and is knackered after 60 minutes. He is absolutely not what United need, which is probably why you will sign him.
They can spend £100 million on a player who will actually improve them, or they can spend £50 million overpaying for a player they don't need, meaning they have to still spend the money on the position in the summer. We all know which of those is the United way now.

Don’t really agree with much of that. I’d like us to look at other options than rice for DM. He’s decent, but not that good from what I’ve seen, certainly not 100m worth. McGinn isn’t a DM, so wouldn’t be the same position.

I know McGinn isn't a DM. That was my point.

McGinn is a decent player but for £50m? Not for me. I'm not sure if he improves United all that much anyway. Decent player, willing runner, good industry and all the rest but probably lacks the necessary quality for United to really challenge at the top level again. Would be good for their squad, but just not at that price.
Rice I think is a much better option, even at double the price. He's got everything in his game and is consistently one of West Ham's top performers and you usually see his name near the top of the metrics for a lot of aspects related to a holding midfielder, which is what United need at this point.

He's a good player, but does he take us to the level of competing for the major honours?

Well he is better than Grealish and City are doing fine. Mainly because they don't play Grealish.

Rice plays a position we’d be better targeting, but 100m for him?! No chance.

That just seems to be the going rate for players. I don't actually think it would be £100m, but I wouldn't be massively surprised given that's what Grealish went for.
There are very few players worth £100m based on ability, but I'd pay whatever it would take to sign Rice if I was United.

Why don't we buy someone better than Rice, for less? Seems the logical move.

£50m for McGinn.

No thanks. We have already ticked the box next to 'Ordinary Scottish Midfielder'.
Decent top 10 player and nothing more.

McGinn's a very good player if played properly. He looked class when we were first promoted (and was being touted as a Manchester United target even then), but Smith insisted he played as a sort of DM. McGinn can play DM but that's not his natural position; he's more of an attacking midfielder, which is where he plays for Scotland.
Gerrard recognised this. Hence he's come to the fore again. His passing is fine so long as he has players making runs for him, again something Gerrard has sorted. He's making things happen in attack. He's not for sale and if he was you wouldn't get him for £50m.
He's not what you want. He'll do fine for Villa and if we creep into the European places he'll still be there. What United need is a competent management structure, a manager who can build a top level team with the right backing from that structure, and the right players to fit into that team; they're likely to come from Europe. I don't think Rice is what you want either.
