Don’t Look Up

No, not a warning about the Premier League table, it’s the name of a really good new Netflix movie with pretty much every famous actor and actress alive. Best described as if Charlie Brooker wrote and directed Armageddon.

Lampoons the left and the right so appeals to most sides of the political spectrum and features some excellent performances. Leo especially. Might pick up a few Oscars.

Enjoy.

Didn’t think it was great tbh.

It is worrying though how well it depicts modern society and that it doesn’t seem far-fetched that the world will end like this.

Leo Di Caprio has to be the GOAT actor btw. There isn’t a single roll he isn’t perfect at.

If anything, it didn't go far enough to reflect reality.

The president did actually listen to the scientists. There was not a huge division between the look up and don't look up folk.

Speaking of which... That was part of the film that was really confusing... The government were clearly putting out the message the comet was real and would boost the economy... then, all of a sudden, the narrative flipped to the more absurd (and realistic) "Don't look up" where trump like supporters were suddenly acting like they didn't believe in the comet, even though the president's whole message was still that the comet was going to bring jobs. Felt like they tacked that part on, where as it should have been the whole premise and would have been more realistic and funnier.

I think it was more an out of sight, out of mind type situation. Where they were told this comet that they couldn’t see as it was only people really looking for it would see it and the only thing they cared about was the potential money it would bring Americans. Almost like a head in the sand situation and only really when it was too late did they see it coming. Up until that point as far as they were concerned it could very well have been fake or at least something that wasn’t worth all the ‘MSM’ hype.

It was the line "they were lying to us" or something that felt a bit tacked on.

imho, there would have been much more comedy value if the president clearly knew it was happening, but was convincing the masses that it was all a hoax.

Dunno, I found it more (tragi)funny that they - much like Trump supporters now he’s telling people to get vaccinated - now feel lied to even though it’s in part down to their own ignorance and lack of accountability for their own beliefs until it’s too late

For that to be funny though, you need the fact that Trump was ambiguous, at best, about the serisouness of virus from the off.

The Don't look up narrative goes.

President believes scientists.
President makes scientist a global star (in a positive way, not like trump/fauci).
President believes tech expert.
President sells her fanbase the idea that the comet is bringing them riches.
All of a sudden, the fanbase doesn't believe in the comet and calls the president a liar.

I know the writers are trying to show both sides, eg, the left look like they care while still trying to find the best political and financial angle. But it felt a bit messy

Yea the ‘they lied” part at the rally seemed totally misplaced when I was watching it too.

There is probably a deleted scene where the government explain to the population that the comet is no threat to them and will make them rich.

Yea, felt disjointed.

At that point, the plan was still for the comet to be collected up by the tech guy, so seeing it in the sky would have fit that narrative. It would still not pose any threat to those who believed the tech angle.

Like i said in my first post, i did enjoy it, but felt they missed the chance to make it could have been a real classic.

The guy at the end firing his machine gun at the meteor was great though!
