Our Midfield (or Lack Of)

I was at the game last night and I just could not believe what I was seeing (particularly in the first half). We made Southampton look like a prime Barcelona.

I’m no coach or tactician, but even I could see (and not just last night) that our midfield is woefully weak. Southampton were playing the ball around us as if we weren’t there. There were professional, fit, international footballers for Spurs who were running around trying to chase or put pressure on the ball but couldn’t get anywhere near the Southampton players.

The crosses from Ward-Prowse into the box should have definitely been dealt with better by our defenders, but why was no one busting a gut to stop the cross in the first place? Surely Ward-Prowse’s crossing ability would have been highlighted to the players beforehand?(note: I have not yet seen any TV footage/analysis, but watching the game live it just seemed like he had the freedom to pick out a cross).

Something has to change in the way we set up. We cannot rely on PEH and Winks alone in central midfield. Certainly Bentacur has to start from now on because I thought he looked a cut above the rest of them when he came on(not difficult I know), but even then; are two central midfielders enough? Shouldn’t we sacrifice one of the forward positions to gain more control of the game/ball?

I don’t think we can just rely on counter attacking football.

What’s the answer guys?

Spurs should sign Broja.

Bentecur and Skipp need to be our 1st choice midfield from now on. Winks and Hojberg are both not good enough

Doubt Chelsea would sell to them. On current attacking form -his and theirs- you'd think they might want him back.

Trust Spurs to make life even worse.

Why is it evertime an opposition player has a half decent game against Spurs, our supporters want to sign him?

I can take the equaliser, but then to concede a replica goal two minutes later is ridiculous. spursy

It's annoying af, but it's actually not all that odd in football.

You’re spot on about JWP being allowed to put 2 crosses in from the same area leading to them scoring the goals.

He scored their goal at their place and every man and his dog know you need to cut off the supply from him.

Can’t say they weren’t the better side but we were 2-1 up and should have seen the game out.

when has that ever happened before? I cannot think of a single game where a team has scored two identical goals within 5 minutes.

Only last night, Coutinho twice assisted Jacob Ramsey within the space of 5 minutes. Coutinho being given space on the half way line, slots a fairly simple ball past the back-tracking centre backs to Ramsey who's bursting through central midfield.

I don't need to tell you teams identify and set out to target specific positional weaknesses and tactical situations as part of their game plan. They don't just go out there and kick the ball about hoping something works. Once a weakness has been successfully exploited, it makes perfect sense to keep trying to expose it before your opponent makes the necessary adjustments. Sometimes it takes several attempts for it to work, sometimes teams score twice in quick succession.

There's really nothing odd about it at all.
