If we invaded another country I wouldn’t be expecting our football team to carry on as normal

You’re in a better place to answer that one Sandy, did you carry on as normal? I was too young at the time to know if we did or didn’t?

It's typical blustery ,windy rhetoric, from the fat cats at FIFA ffs, we should ban them completely not only from football, but from all sports.

While I’m not opposed per se to excluding footballing nations from participation in sporting events as a tactic to sanction that country, I am opposed to the selectivity of its utilisation.

There has never been any calls to exclude England from tournaments over Afghanistan, Iraq or Libya (or Yemen, Gaza & elsewhere via proxy war). Nobody is asking how to stop US & UK drone strikes or prosing to exclude our national sports teams.

It’s the blatant hypocrisy & double standards in the coverage that make all of this difficult to stomach.

I get what you’re saying but it’s also the do two wrongs make a right argument to it. I assume you were asking for us to be banned from competitions at the time as well.

I can only speak from my own pov and that’s if we were to invade another country in the way Russia have done then I’d expect us to be banned from any competition where the participants are representing the country.

I haven't asked for any country to be banned from participating in football tournaments, and I'm not calling for it now either. I'm not however *necessarily* opposed to such calls provided the calls are consistent.

I'm simply pointing out that our crimes - which are much more frequent and much more devastating than anything that has happened in Ukraine (so far at least) - are never met with the same reactions; wall to wall coverage, emphasis on the plight of the victims, calls for boycotts & sanctions, etc etc...

I would greatly welcome such calls to be made with regards to our [ongoing] military violence abroad (both direct & indirect), and indeed argue we have a greater moral imperative to do so; we're responsible for the predicted consequences of our actions, and those are the ones we can must do something about. Our crimes should therefore be our *primary* (note; NOT *exclusive*) focus.

So FIFA have changed their minds after some fierce criticism from many quarters , hoo bloody ray ! common sense has prevailed. Also, other sports are likely to follow suit, they must all have read my comments on this article !
