Would Putin really use nukes?

The more I think about it the less I think it would happen. They act as the ultimate ‘what if?’ threat in his arsenal but he must surely know that even if he was in a direct war with NATO and was losing it would be far easier to sue for peace than pretty much commit suicide by starting a nuclear war.

As the days go by I think the west should step in in Ukraine as we’re witnessing an extermination and Putin surely won’t stop there. At the very least call Putin’s bluff and set up a no fly zone. Are Ukraine in NATO? Nope but stopping Putin now will save us a whole lot of trouble in the future. If the West shoots a few planes down it’ll certainly aggravate the situation but Russia are no match for NATO and will not risk losing everything by declaring war on a far superior force. Please step in NATO. Call his bluff.

I agree tbh but define peace. The threat of nuclear war wouldn't go away, it would be like it was during the cold war. Also, Russsia and the west fighting wars through proxy countries in South America and Asia, coups everywhere as the battle for influence would be hot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
During the Cold war we had peace in Europe despite the threat of Nuclear War (which is the raison d'etre of the nuclear deterrent). We also had the EU which was the best thing that happened to the UK and other Western european countries and we all became secure united and content. Today we dont have peace in Europe (and as a UK resident we dont have the EU anymore) and we are closer to nuclear war in Europe more than we have ever been during the Cold War.

So thats what I will define as an accepatble peace for me (despite far away proxy wars) if it means staying alive and carrying on from the mess we are now in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peace in Europe because the wars were exported to other countries. Many wars and unrest in South America and Asia were literally just Russia vs the West even though the people dying weren't Western or Russian but you are correct nevertheless.. Also, the Cuban missile crisis was close than this IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cuba is in the caribbean... Im talking about war in Europe. (We came pretty close to it in the early 80s also when Russian Jets shot down a SKorean civil 747 aircrfaft full of people).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If the Cuban missile crisis had escalated into nuclear war you reckon Europe would have remained peaceful?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
no of course not but this conflict is about keeping peace in Europe, which is a unique place in the World historically when it comes to warring neighbouring nations. And it is where I live. So lets not digress.

Ban nuclear power stations to reduce the amount of residual material for nuclear weapons.
Plant more trees for fuel and develop new technology to mine/pump remaining fossil fuel resources. Do not worry about the "carbon footprint" rubbish. When I was a kid our coalmen used to leave them all over our garden path and it never did us any harm.
Burning the paperwork produced by EU regulations could fuel Europe for decades.
Improve solar-power technology and make it free (offset by reduced benefit payments for power costs).
Rolling hedgehogs along pavements and road gutters to pick up litter would be cheaper than employing council litter-pickers who appear every few months, (standard rules of employment for the tiggiewinkles with a 15 minute break in every 4 hour working period and free water and cat food. Works canteen and vending machines not necessary. Never seen a hedgehog with pockets to keep their change in anyway).
Ban all cats apart from comfort pets for the elderly.
Ban all dogs with irresponsible owners - mess or behaviour-wise. The dogs that is. No. Both!
Ban all hamster cages with squeaky wheels.
Ban goldfish bowls - so cruel. Buy a properly equipped aquarium.
Make the new school-leavers who work in Employment Agencies spend 6 months working in the places they send people to. 6 months in one of the military services would be even better.
Make Manchester United Premier League and European Champions again.
I'll stop now because unfortunately that last wish is currently unrealistic. Some of those comments are actually heartfelt, some are a laugh. Not too hard to work out which is which but this post has kept me busy while my casserole is in the oven.

I liked the creative use of language where you used 'casserole' to mean 'head'.

Europe is the continent which has fought the most wars and the most brutal wars too, and by quite some distance. It's no coincidence that Europe was far more advanced militarily than any other continent as they had developed the most effective tools to kill each other before turning those tools on the rest of the world.

But that has changed since WW2 tbf so I guess you have a point, and rightfully so because European wars are so fiery that they could end the human race, and life as we know it, not to mention split the earth into two or more pieces.

Keep the peace for the sake of the entire world.
