Leeds Utd v Aston Villa Matchday Thread

Evening All and Welcome to the Matchday Thread, Jesse's 2nd game in charge and his first taste of the Elland Road atmosphere
Jm's had a bit more time to work with the squad and hopefully iron out a few niggles so this should be a good game

Venue...Elland Road...Date...10th March...Kick Off...1945hrs

Team News
Leeds United
Leeds striker Patrick Bamford will return to action after a three-month injury lay-off in the home game against Aston Villa.

Bamford has been sidelined with a foot injury since December and head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed the striker will appear off the substitutes' bench.

Diego Llorente is back in contention after a muscle strain, but Tyler Roberts (hamstring) has been ruled out for the rest of the season following surgery. Kalvin Phillips and skipper Liam Cooper (both hamstring) remain sidelined.

Aston Villa
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard faces a welcome selection dilemma as his side look to claim their third straight Premier League win at Elland Road.

Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa are both available after missing the 4-0 win over Southampton following positive coronavirus tests, while midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is also named in the squad after injury.

Gerrard's only current absentee remains Marvelous Nakamba, who is nudging closer to a return after overcoming his recent knee injury.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Aston Villa have won only three of their past 16 league games against Leeds, squandering a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 in this season's reverse fixture on 9 February.

Leeds United
Leeds can equal the club record of six successive league defeats, which happened most recently in February 2004.
They could also match the club Premier League record of four consecutive games without a goal, set from December 1994 to January 1995.
The Whites have conceded 41 goals in their past 13 league fixtures, failing to keep a clean sheet during that period.
The only manager to lose both of his first two Premier League matches in charge of Leeds was George Graham in 1996.
Patrick Bamford is one short of 100 career league goals. He has had only 22 minutes of Premier League playing time since mid-September because of injury.

Aston Villa
Villa have won successive games but their only longer Premier League winning streak since the beginning of the 2010-11 season was a run of four from September to October 2020.
They are vying to earn consecutive away league victories for the first time since December 2020.
Philippe Coutinho has been directly involved in six goals in four home appearances for Villa, but he has failed to score or assist in any of his three away games.
Ollie Watkins has not scored in any of his nine league matches versus Leeds.
Steven Gerrard played for LA Galaxy in a 2-2 home draw versus a New York Red Bulls team managed by Jesse Marsch in August 2016.

A tough Home game with Villa on a high after their win last week and Leeds looking to stop the rot
This has got 3-1 written all over it with Raph Rodders and Jack finally putting chances away

I assumed a new boss at this stage woukd have stopped square pegging players and we would have seen an improvement but shockingly no... so Im trying to not be pessimistic but after watching that I can't see us surviving.
If JM keeps playing Koch in dm, James up front, Ridrigo in midfield and Dallas at rb and Ayling although he was our best player tonight he should be at rb.
A complete and utter disaster waiting to hapoen with that line uo and JM in his judgement thought that was the right call... Extremely concerning.
It makes you wonder whether Big Sam would have been able to sort us out or are we a busted flush and the poor recruitnent and lack of recruitnent has ultimately cost us
in our 2nd season and back down to the championship we must go and Orta, Kinnear and Radz can shuffle off
to pastures new and the 49ers can employ a team of recruitment leaders that ensure we sign players that hopefully get us promoted next season.
Very sad but hey there are worse things happening in the world and we just have to accept the odds on us staying up look at this moment pretty slim.

A gallon of Irnbru sounds more like it, Highland. Thanks for doing the match day thread, by the way. Can I borrow your 2-1 next time? I’m just not sure who’s getting the ‘1’.

It's like watching a horror movie every week now. But one where you know the script (horrid defending, wayward passing, biased refereeing, opponents diving) and the ending is awful.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I couldn’t describe all Leeds’ supporters feelings any better! I think even the team have given up and think they are going down.

It certainly looks like we are going down. I just can’t see a win anywhere at the moment.

As for the fans booing at half time. To be fair I think a lot of it was for the ref! He was abysmal!

A few muted boos at full time but many applauded the players that stayed back. I noticed Raphinha was straight down the tunnel though. He’s not a happy chap right now.
