Champions league places.

Got asked a question in work and had no idea of the answer so thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone knows. If Rangers win the Europa League and gain champions league football through that, does their champions league spot from the league move on to hearts?

I said I don't think that would be the case but unsure if that's true or why.

Think it would go to the next ranked country in the Uefa rankings.....not sure though

This season Spain got 5 teams straight into the Champions League...purely because Villarreal won the Europa League but hadn't qualified for the UCL through their domestic league

Had they qualified through their league, the 5th placed team in Spain would not have got into the UCL, Uefa would just have given an automatic group spot to the team from the best ranked country who's Champions hadn't qualified automatically

So in this case, if Rangers win the Europa League, Hearts won't get in, as Rangers have qualified for the Champions League already, they will just move Rangers up the rankings to give them an automatic group spot, and team below them will have to go through one less qualifying tie

Cheers for that, like I said I didn't think hearts would get it but wasn't sure why that would be the case. I'll tell the guy in work tomorrow 😃

For an extra place we need it to go to a team that didn't qualify in its own right. For example if Hearts had finished second rather than third and Rangers win Europa league. But because Rangers had already secured a non champions path, that would pass to next best placed country moving up.

I think Hearts should inherit our qualification path if we win Europa though.
