Why look at the decade though? Why not look at the past 100 years. Liverpool and united have been big spenders for decades. City not until 10 years ago or whenever the sheik took over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

yep Liverpool bought the title in 87.8 when they signed Barnes Beardsley Aldridge in one year.

That would be 400m spend today
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bought with the money from selling Rush to Juve
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hardly. So £3m for Rush covered £2m for Barnes £2m for Beardsley plus Houghton Aldridge etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sold Rush for £3.4m, bought Beardsley for £2.15, Barnes for £1.3m and Houghton for £987,000. Net spend of just over a million.

But yeah bought the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Net spend of 1m then is like 100m now.

And you bought Aldridge too in January 87

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course it is

Talking shiite as usual.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Beardsley was record signing back then for 2m

For one year, getting desperate now. He was also the first time we’d broken the £1m barrier in a transfer

Biggest spend ever on players that year surely?

Nah that’s stupid because it should be judged against what is being done at clubs in the same league of a similar standing. And Newcastle were a facking shambles by comparison. It’s like United and Arsenal fans are entitled because we don’t want shiiiiiit owners, because Mel Morris is a clown.
----------------------------------------------------------
OK lets go by clubs who have roughly the same standing within English football - Leeds had it worse for around the same amount of time. Bates is an idiot, and the Italian guy after him was insane & stupid.

Newcastle were relegated twice, but the 1st time they kept the majority of the squad when Ashley could've overthought & dismantled it on the cheap if he wanted. The 2nd time they did make a few more changes, but he brought in Benitez as the manager who you'd trust at that level. There's plenty of owners who would've seen them fade away into oblivion after one relegation let alone two (their own next door neighbours can attest to that), he didn't.

Stand by what I said, Ashley might not even be in the worse 50% of owners who've been in English football the last 15-20 years. The bar's low, but it is what it is. They weren't as hard done by as they could've been, not even close.

“ Biggest spend ever on players that year surely?”

Whose? The club or league record standards?

The £1m record transfer was for Trevor Francis in 1979. Liverpool didn’t spend more than £1m on a player until signing Beardsley in 87.

Either way how did we buy the league? How much more did we spend than our competitors that year? Did we spend an abnormal amount compared to the rest of the league?
