Few interesting squad bits to consider and potential movers going into next year! Starting at the back…
Ederson - seems mad to criticise given another year, another golden glove, but I think he was sloppy especially at the business end of the season. His shots to save ratio isn’t actually very good (about average in the league). Ederson made 62 saves this season, the lowest in the league. Granted part of that is testament to how good we are, having only faced 88 shots on target, but City still conceded 26 goals. Compare that to our nearest rivals, Liverpool, they faced 110 shots on target, 82 saves and also conceded 26. Not a major issue, but definitely one worth keeping an eye on, I thought in games like the semi against Real there were goals conceded where he could potentially have done better.
CB - Stones really is the lynchpin in the middle, so so underrated. Dias was brilliant when he came in last season, but he looks better playing alongside Stones. And likewise, so does Laporte. Bit of an easy target when he came, Stones, but he has really focused his game now, just a shame there is always at least one niggling injury each season. Ake was also great when called upon, I think keeping those four fit and using in rotation is definitely the way, Fernandinho at cb was sadly a bit of a failed experiment!
FB - Kyle Walker, wow, key player for City. Has come such a long way under Guardiola since that mistake against Wigan and will be solid to replace in a few seasons time (hopefully). Scousers hail Trent as the best in the business, they are both very different players though, and Walker makes a huge difference for us in the big games. Cancelo, probably the most frustrating City player for me, actually think he plays better at LB than RB. Saw a comment on here a few weeks back saying “he thinks he’s playing beach soccer" which sounds about right! Has moments where he looks like Messi, followed by moments where he emulates Ben Thatcher. Saw a stat that says he has had the most attempts on goal for us this season, but has only bagged 3 times in all comps! Switched off for goals conceded against Madrid and Villa, and persistently plays floated high balls into the box for Haaland who hasn’t actually played yet. Wouldn’t be against the idea of some extra competition in the FB areas as we were completely out of shape when it mattered most this season due to injuries.
Midfield - Rodri, brilliant season, lost it a little in the middle but made it count when it happened. So happy he has settled into the DM role Fern used to master on his own, it was a bit of a hamstring using the double pivot of Rodri and Gundogan. Fair play to Rodri. Good shout for poty. Would be gutted to see the experience of both Gundogan and Fernandinho leave the dressing room this summer, both have been excellent servants to the club. Gundogan I think definitely has more to give, but just depends if he is happy with more of a squad role and would not begrudge seeing him leave for more regular game time.
Attack - not in bad shape to say it’s another year with the false 9 experiment! It’s Liverpool who are more lauded for their unrivalled forward line, but we’ve still scored more goals in fewer attempts than our closest rivals in the league this season. Solid seasons from KDB and Foden. Grealish actually has good stats, but he will need to do more next season. Came close to some big game moments (cleared off the line in Madrid), hope he can move it up a gear. Disappointed with Mahrez this season, again, sounds mad to criticise our top scorer. But I thought he went missing in the big games this year (albeit he scored in Spain!). When you look at Mahrez at his best - PSG legs last year - I thought he squandered a lot of chances this season and hasn’t reached his previous levels.
Potential movers
Think there could be a bit of movement this summer with our attackers. Lots of talk about Jesus moving. I think that’d be a shame tbh. He stepped up in the run in, fair enough he isn’t going to be the man to lead the front line week in week out, but I still think he has much to offer and looked played well in big games like against Madrid. Like Gundogan it just depends what role he is happy with.
Sterling, used to be he’s be great for club and poor for country. But that role seems to have reversed now. Still played his part this year, but no where near the levels he was, and should still get a decent fee if moved on this year.
Of all those on the list of potential leavers, Bernardo Silva is the one I’d be most gutted about - strong rumours his girlfriend is unsettled. He’s a terrace hero who epitomises the graft Guardiola demands of his players. Only Brentford’s Christian Norgaard (287.9km) has covered more ground in the league this season than Bernardo (281.6km), and Norgaard has played 200 minutes more league football than the Portuguese.
Gone to town a bit 😂
End of season squad thoughts

Zinchenkos a decent option in the squad! He’s not suited to every game at LB though, and when he’s called upon due to injury issues against the wrong side he can come up short. Definitely think a FB should be on the cards this summer, we were so ropey at the back when a few injuries hit at the back end of the season.

Alvarez scored a double hat trick the other day didn’t he! Excited to see him play, but surely means the end for 1 or 2 of Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus and Bernardo (hopefully not the latter one!)

We definitely need a LB

And a DM , but not sure Phillips is the right guy to play back up to Rodri and being English will cost way more than he is worth.

Great article. I plan to share my thoughts on the season for the league & CL.
Ederson- The crazy thing is if you had to pick the bones of his performances across the season he is almost faultless. No errors that lead to goals etc. the challenge is we are comparing him to other Top 5 goal keepers and that’s where he comes short as it seems that each time we face a decent team their first chance leads to a goal. I’ve been thinking about his performances a lot and I think due to the lack of action in his box(this season more than most) his concentration levels have dipped and he relies on coming of his line forcing forwards into mistakes rather than taking the right postion and preparing himself to make the save.
I think that’s where Allisson is good. He gets off his line, psyches the attacker into a panic but is still ready and prepared to make the save. Ederson doesn’t and that’s a huge concern. He doesn’t have the greatest reflexes but he is still better than what he has shown this season so I think he will get better.
Walker - Pur best defender this season. Weird season because we had the lowest xg conceded since opta starters tracking these things but I never felt our CBS were great. Dias had a dip and Laporte was poor at the start of the season.
Canceló I don’t know. Leave it to Pro honestly because he made a lot of stupid decisions that could have cost us the league in the last few months. We NEED a left back and I hope we get the Brighton fella.
Bernardo - one of the reasons why we conceded few chances as him and Rodri were our 2 best players. But if someone comes in with a good bud I think now is time to let him go. Not only for his sake but I think pep will move either Foden or Grealish into the 8 role next to KDB. Will be gutted to lose him but not against the club letting him go as he has been an amazing servant. Gundo must stay.
Had a long think about it and between Jesus, Mahrez , and Sterling think I would rather Mahrez left. Great season and has been key in our recent CL performances as he also keeps Sterling out But rather keep Sterling as he is a better player in the league games.
Regarding CBs most city fans know Stones has upped his performances but Pep is still reluctant as he hopes Laporte will rediscover his pre-injury form. Now I won’t doubt Pep as 2 seasons ago I was one of a few slagging of Gundo but if Laporte was to leave I wouldn’t be too sad.

^ fair comments.
The thing that worries me more about Ederson, is if it were us that went to penalties in two cup finals this season in not sure we’d have won both trophies. I never expect Ederson to save pens, or 1 v 1s (how immense was Joe Hart at that), likewise I never expect us to score pens either tbh 😂
Lots of talk about Ake moving. That’d be a shame imo. He is a capable back up

I think it would be a real shame to lose Ake, he rarely lets us down and covers CB and LB. Seems just the type of player we need. Talk of him, Zinchenko Jesus and Sterling going as well as little Fern would mean a pretty extensive rebuild. I know Alvarez plays a similar type game to Jesus but will he be a step up and will he play when needed without fuss?

We conceded 5.32 goals more than expected in last 9 away games the worst record by far in that timeframe lol so De Gea was worst keeper in the league by miles for last few months of the season and then he gets praised lol.
Spurs conceded 11 goals from a similar XG against that Man Utd conceded in same period lol.

Ederson meanwhile conceded 4 goals from 5.12XG in last 8 away games so basically you would have conceded probably 7 goals with De Gea in goal.

According to the papers this morning, Guardiola has a “secret pact” with Bernardo to allow him to leave this summer, if the deal is good for City.
I don’t think it’s ever been a secret our players are free to leave whenever they want providing a suitable offer is lodged?
I do think the club should do all they can to keep Bernardo for another 12 months a least. If Fernandinho, Gundogan and Bernardo all left in one window we lose a lot of experience from the MF going into the new season. And that’s the area we’ve always had a real advantage over the rest of the league.
