I'm not sure it is the be all and end all.
Some will point to Tony Adams, Roy Keane and John Terry but these players would be leaders whether they're skipper or not. Gerrard was still a rampaging, inspiring player for Liverpool, before he was made captain. I'm sure he would have driven his side to 05 glory, skipper or not.
Man City have just won another premier league with a quiet skipper, Lloris was captain of France in 2018. Did he being captain make any difference?

Being a captain isn't just what you do on the pitch. It's being the clubs role model, inside and outside the club, in training, being the go between between staff and players and various other things but yeah the captain is important. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be one.
