England 0 Hungary 4

Not that I really care but what a shocking result.Has Southgate lost the dressing room ? .Players played like they didnt want to be there and rather be on a beach than some crap tournament. Still - Should not be getting thrashed by Hungary. Disgraceful .

Unfortunately for England, they need a manager like Conte.
Southgate is an uninspirational ass. Its obvious he's lost the dressing room.
Why not let Stevie Gerrard have a go at management?
Or big Sam?
Or Harry Redface?
Or Potter?
Or as a final resort I'd ask Kloppity if he'd like a real challenge!

Gerrard - yes, please - give him the gig!

With Southgate you have two opinions.

1. Those who know nothing about football and generally just watch England in the big tournaments, they think he's a wonderful father figure guiding these vunerable young men (on millions of pounds) through life's difficulties.

2. Those who know their football and follow the game thoroughly at club and international level, they think he's far too negative and his tactics are causing an excellent group of players to underachieve.

That was such a wasted opportunity against Italy last Sumner. I wonder what privately the players must think when they are led by great managers like Pep, Klopp, Conte and Tuchel at their clubs then when they rock up for England they have a mid table Championship manager at the helm

Players love him because he's not shouty and they only have to remember a few things when they play a game and its the same things as the last game. Love him I tell ya.

For me the allardyce philosophy applies to Southgate. If he gets good results then the criticism of the defensive football can be argued against. If he doesn't then he doesn't have a lot to fall back on.

He rode the wave of newfound positivity around the England setup in the past couple of tournaments. The relative success was nothing to do with tactical acumen, purely about getting a good vibe going in the squad so they'd play for each other, putting out a conservative system and then leaving them to it.

Now the vibes have kinda fizzled out, he doesn't have the nous to get the team firing from a tactical perspective.

All true, but you forgot to mention the single biggest factor behind Southgate’s tournament “success” … getting some of the spawniest draws in the history of tournament football.

I think it's possible to think both. I feel like he knows what it means to play for England and the experience he had there has been pretty important in building a cohesive and relaxed squad that's done better than we have in a long time.

But at the same time it's obvious that when it comes to in game tactics, he's far too nervous about losing than looking to go out there and win games. I think Southgate probably should go because he's shown that it's unlikely that we can go further under him, but I'm not sure who the solution is.

Yes, both the opinions above have merit and are not mutually exclusive. Southgate is a good ambassadorial figure and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had, during his tenure, improved morale, helped players etc. But sadly he does seem overly cautious, which may be holding back some of the best attacking players we’ve had for years. And he got the Euro final wrong.
