No need for a new DM after all!

I know people are starting to worry about our lack of signings, and of an accomplished defensive midfielder in particular.

But fear not. The answer, as is so often the case, was right in front of us all along.

‘Darren Fletcher has advised Erik ten Hag that trialling Harry Maguire as a holding midfielder in pre-season may alleviate the immediate need for United to make a midfield signing. Fletcher feels Maguire has the ball playing ability to make the transition.’

I for one am quite relieved and can now start looking forward to the new season.

Not going to get excited about this potential game changing tactical master stroke until rdd’s source confirms it.

Retrain him? Excellent idea. Yes.
Let’s see if he can make good scramble eggs and a cuppa tea.

Fair play. You guys do have a decent sense of humour about it

i am guessing this a joke story

a dm is much more than someone that can tackle playing higher up the pitch than the defensive line. Their are skillets a dm needs that no amount of retraining can help maguire develop

on a side note; I remember ud trialing rio as dm in the early 2000. Blackburn and robbie savage schooled our midfield that day.

Quite a few on here seem to have always wanted Lindelof tried as a DM which is just as ridiculous.

I remember that. Start of 2006, I believe. We won at Wolves in the FA Cup with a midfield pairing of Ferdinand and Rooney! That was after trying Smith and Scholes for a while, then we finished the season with Giggs and O’Shea. Still somehow came second.

Already playing Scotlands centre back in midfield so this makes sense.

On a serious note, I think Lindelof could play that role very well. I personally think Maguire's best role is out of the club.
