Football Jargon

You can tell I've absolutely nothing better to do when it comes to this

Anyone ever noticed that footballers are never happy or pleased, they're always "delighted"? I can't ever recall using the word myself to describe my or anyone else's joy, but the word seems to be an essential staple of a footballer's vocabulary.

Chestnuts from the past are, "over the moon, Brian" and "sick as a parrot".

I've noticed that JM is fond of the words "moment(s)", "clarity" and "the group".

Terms that have disappeared from football's vocabulary are, "flat back four", "libero", and "sweeper".

Numbers are now used to define a player's role in a team, e.g. no.8 or no.10.

No-one uses the tern "goalie" anymore. It's always "keeper". You rarely hear the term "attacker" these days - it's usually "striker" or "forward".

Also, "undisclosed fee" (why the secrecy?) and "add-ons" have crept into everyday football terminology more recently.

Like any other language, football's language evolves and changes with time to be eventually embraced as standard. Try comparing the language of Shakespeare with modern day English - there's a big difference.

I'm sure there are many more terms that have disappeared from football's language, and equally, many more that have become part of its everyday use.

If anyone can call to mind any others, feel free to add them in the comments below.

In the meantime, I've just checked and no, we still haven't signed a striker or a left-back.

Oh well, never mind. The day will come - eventually......hopefully......zzzzz.

''They've got the bragging rights" – the most irritating and mindless football commentator's term. after 10 years, I'm delighted to say it's on the way out. Hopefully...

North American sports are so much worse when it comes to annoying terms.
"You've got to be kidding me" after a routine play bugs me more than it should.

The Americanisms that are being forced into football annoy me. "Clutch" especially.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This. Awful term
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What word would you use to replace clutch?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
“Final plays”…. What? Is Jesse expecting a touchdown score?

I see it as respect to learn the standard jargon where you are being employed, even when it is in a different language. When I was living in the USA, I thought some of their ‘soccer’ terminology was weird, but just went with it and tried hard to remember! I just reminded the national teams competed under FIFA and CONCACAF when they became too much. Game, set, match.

Take any of the main US sports and seriously they don’t know the meaning of passion. A few years back when we went to New York I took my boys to Madison Square Garden to see a Rangers ice hockey match. I was jumping up and and down whenever Rangers scored while the home supporters barely broke off from their popcorn. Put them in Elland Road and they’d cr@p themselves!

First comment for a while. Decided to take a step back after the roller coaster that led to final day elation.

On the OP point - been watching the Lionesses and has been a real joy but the use of the word 'Overload' is driving me mad.

On the point of American Sports, not sure I agree as having been in a packed 'Metrodome' in New Orleans, the Saints fans were very fanatical and extremely loud.

Fenway Park ( Boston Red Sox ) was another very atmospheric Sporting Arena - This was where we first heard 'Sweet Caroline' quite a few years back although not so keen hearing it at UK football matches.

It's been very interesting reading some of the comments on here in recent weeks, talk about knee jerk reactions concerning out's and In's!

Finally a massive thank you to St. Kalvin and Rapha, you have both been absolutely massive for LUFC and deserve every success in the future. ( Same to Jack if he does leave).
