Assuming that Spurs have more

or less finished spending this transfer window, how do they line up for the first game of the season against Southampton in a little over two weeks time. There may be more, but I doubt they will be ready to slot straight in.

I am going for:

Lloris
Doherty
Romero
Dier
Lenglet
Perisic
Bentancur
Bissouma
Kulu
Son
Kane

A strong starting XI assuming all are fit and up to speed.

With Champion's League and Premier matches within days of each other and the rule allowing 5 substitutes in Premier matches is a "starting X1" no longer relevant?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well unless you can start a match with more than 11 players, it is completely relevant.

We have t finished spending Sandy - another CB and AM to come in. Our net spend is about £50m so we still have £100m plus additional sales burning a hole in our pocket - I think you will see at least one more very high calibre signing
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But would they be ready to slot into the first game of the season Striketeam, and who would they replace as a CB and in midfield? Who would you drop from midfield out of Bissouma and Bentacur with another midfielder incoming, or would you drop Kulu?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is exactly the type of mentality that Conte is trying to get rid of at the club.

This isn't the 70s and 80s anymore and there is no such thing as a first 11 at an elite level club. You have a first team squad of players that are capable of stepping in when needed as well as playing different systems and providing different solutions.

I think a lot of those decisions that you mention here will come down to form and the amount of games we are playing within a certain timeframe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The article is about which players will start the first match of the season. Where does it say anything about just having 11 players play every match? Not sure why your are even mentioning the 1970s and 1980s.

Doherty & Davies are not good enough to get in a top 6 team… let alone a team fighting for the title.

I’d expect Royal to push on this season… Lenglet to start ahead of Davies.

I'd assume the 11 that start the first game are all fully fit, are the 11 that have impressed Conte the most in training/ pre season and fully understand the formation and tactics. As others as mentioned, its a squad game these days (Look at City, their best player in KDB doesn't always start) With a huge number of games, a mid season WC and 5 subs, its more about the strength of squad than simply just those that start

Ah I see. I understood it at the new first choice 11. I have read too many articles where people talk about first 11s as if we can have a squad of 12 players...

In that case he surely has to go with the same 11 as we had in the run at the end of last season with the addition of the players that Conte feels are "his players".

The players that could come in would be IMO:

Spence, Skipp, Richarlison, Bissouma

The positions at risk:

Kulu, Royal, Hojbjerg, Bentancur

To be totally honest, if Hojbjerg and Davies are not given a chance to retain their places in the team I would not be too happy. The levels both of them have reached should mean that they are given a chance to maintain those levels.

The depth that we have now in central midfield is ridiculous! And that doesn't take into account Ndombele or LoCelso!

Nobody is disputing it is not a squad game. But the article clearly states, which XI will START the first match of the season.

We are only 2.5 weeks away from the new season. Time has flown by.

Shows how well Spurs have used this time.

The truth is that you can only judge the success of a window in retrospect. So we won't really know how good this window was until January - March next year. A little like we didn't realise how good the January window was where we signed Kulu and Bentancur until clinching that champions league spot! But at this point in time we look to have really organised ourselves well!
