Thoughts on the Window

Just posting my thoughts on another forum and might as well post on here too. I personally feel Spence will be our last signing. I think we need another top CB and a creative midfielder like Maddison, but I don’t think we will get it unfortunately.

It’s an 8/10 window though so very good and I’m pleased. It can certainly be improved upon though and signing those positions mentioned would change it to a 10/10 outstanding window. I can live with Spence being our last bit of business because our squad is now well equipped, but part of me feels if we truly want to challenge the likes of City/Liverpool, we need another CB and CAM.

Maddison and Torres from Villereal would be my picks. Leicester are in financial difficulties and look like they will need to sell a big player. Torres we can get as part of Lo Celso going the other way. I don’t think this will happen though and I think it will just be outgoings now. Thoughts?

To be fair, i am not sure it matters what the model is. This window has been a success whether it stops here or we get more in.

Fans are obsessed with how much is spent, how much a player costs...but yet some of our bestest signings have been exceptional value and lesser names.

I think the way LFC approach the VVD signing is a good example of waiting to get your man and not just buying for the sake of it. If we cannot get the top CB signings we want, for whatever reason, then we wait. Lenglet seems like a bit of a low risk low cost contingency, who may work out brilliantly.

Think we will get a late deal or 2 in.

I agree. I think that we will do this with Bastoni.

We need to remember that there is a World Cup in November so lots of players will not want to take chances with their position in case something goes wrong.

What has impressed me is that they have managed to position the team well with Lenglet as a very good stop gap while we wait for our first choice targets.

I think there will be more. The longer the window goes on, the more players will be available as clubs trim the fat in preparation for buys in the last couple of weeks of August.

I don't think we'll sign a CB as I think we'll go back to Inter on Bastoni either in Jan or next summer given his contract is running down, but I can see us going for an attacking midfielder, be that Maddison or one of the other European names.

We're rumoured to have spent £115 so far but if you take into account predicted sales, we'll end up roughly breaking even. Here's a rough estimate on who might be leaving...

Royal 20m
Reggy 20m
Winks 15-20m
Gil - Loan
Gio - £25m
Ndombele - Loan
Tanganga £15m
Rodon £20m

Total £120m

What happened to that £150m that was going to go on squad investment? If we do sell that lot then the way we're operating at the moment is no different to what we've done before. It's the same sell to buy model. We're probably stronger for it but in order to really challenge we need to be spending beyond what we earn from player sales. If the recruitment stops now, and we ship that lot out, it's gonna be seriously underwhelming, however smart the business is. It's not the ambition Conte was looking for. I could be wrong and any addition of a Maddison or a top class CB will show that but the proof will come at the end of August, not now. We can't declare this a success until we know who's in and who's out and what the net spend is. Then we'll know if the model has changed. From what I see it's the same model, just brought forward a month a so.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ll never understand this attitude of just because we’ve got money, we must spend it. We’ve done some great business and if it makes commercial sense as well, happy days. Which mega star are we realistically going to sign? Your post also only makes sense if we ship those players out, some of whom were very expensive, but maybe you have a short memory. Spending for the sake of spending simply doesn’t work. I trust the club. I know it goes against your agenda but I don’t think we’ve got much to moan about so far.

Thoughts on the window ?

I've got window cleaners who charge £25 every 6 weeks to clean them all

Bastoni doesn’t have the World Cup to worry about.

People do realise the free transfers would’ve still cost us money in signing on fees right?

This would also come out of our transfer budgets and I bet perisic fee would’ve been big

This is the sort of cretinous response I was kind of expecting.

We all want to be as good as Liverpool but they're very much the exception, not the rule. They're the only side that are selling smartly, buying even better and have every cog turning perfectly. That's the only way you can have success by spending within your means and it's bloody rare.

Whether you want to hear it on not, the only realistic way of winning silverware is by showing ambition and committing to spend as much as the bigger teams do, both on transfers and on wages. The window for that opportunity shuts completely if you don't qualify for the CL. We've qualified therefore you try to strengthen whilst you can. Correct me if I'm wrong but that £150m was there to support Conte was it not? The line was that this was in addition to player sales. Now, we've yet to see who's right on this as the window still has a while to run but we can't categorically call this a brilliant window as we just don't know how the new guys will get on. This is best measured in January or May. All I do know is that if we sell who we're rumoured to sell we'll be roughly in the black again, which is and always has been, Levy's model.

You're right, you don't have to spend money because it's there but doing so will confirm the club has changed its ways and the priority sits firmly on the pitch and not the balance sheet. As things stand, all that's changed is that we've got business done early.

Let's see how things look in a month. You say you trust the club? I don't. The only thing I trust is that Levy won't compromise with anyone on the way he runs the club, Conte included. It's been that way for 20 years and I don't see it changing all the time he's in control of the club. We might assemble a great side under Conte, as we did under Poch, but will we go again, reinvest heavily again and again? I have my doubts.

We need another top level CB and a goal scoring creative midfielder, we are an injury or two away from having to rely on Sanchez, and Tanganga, Rodon look like leaving

Honestly Fridgeboy you are turning into the most miserable so called supporter on the board. What does the club have to actually do to please you,?

I did notice you were on the Arsenal board praising them, whilst always being negative about anything Spurs. Sure you are not a closet Gunner?

😂 well coming from the most loathed man on 606 I take that as a compliment.

I’m happy with where we are but I don’t think we’re seeing a change in ambition from the club. Don’t look for the negativity in my comment, accept it for the realistic take that it is, rather than another in a long line of posts with an extra helping of blind optimism.

I think I’m just being cautious as there’s no guarantee this is going to work. We’re likely to sell as much as we buy by the looks of it and as if this evening we’re looking at a loan option for Zaniolo at Roma, which is pretty underwhelming when you consider the Maddison/Eriksen links. We’re going for the cheap option again.

Listen, it’s just opinions. Most people don’t like yours so I’m not gonna lose any sleep over you not respecting mine. I just think we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves before a ball has been kicked but I’m as hopeful as the rest of us that it all works out.

Regarding my comments on the Arsenal and United boards, so what?! I’m just a bit sick of Spurs fans saying how shiiiiit Jesus is when he’s quite clearly a top drawer player. If you’d asked at the start of the window who you’d prefer Jesus or Richarlison, we’d have all gone for Jesus. I’m not gonna contradict that just because he’s joined a rival. I happen to think United are gonna be ones to watch this year under Ten Hag and they’re looking a more cohesive, progressive side already.

Still a Spurs fan but also a football fan. I’m not as tribalistic. I love the game, not the them vs us pantomime.

Cretinous 😂

So much drama. Honestly, just take things less seriously, you’ll find you enjoy football much more. Let’s just see what happens. A lot can happen between now and the start of the season.
