Tyler made his comments while being interviewed about the Premier League launch in 1992 by Radio 4's Today presenter Martha Kearney and Justin Webb.
He said the game was "in a bit of a crisis at that time", adding: "We weren't that long after Hillsborough and other hooligan-related issues as well, so it was a very much a difficult time for the game generally."
Tyler has since apologised, implying his remarks were not meant to be conflated or taken as an insult and offensive to Liverpool supporters but two separate issues.... mmm I'm not so sure I believe him.
I think as as soon as those words were uttered it was blindingly obvious how they would be interpreted so iether he meant it to be interpreted so or he is a bumbling senile individual that doesn't have any self awareness of what rubbish is spewing from his gob and iether way I would not miss his dreary depressing commentary if as I suspect Sky invariably cancel him.

Yeah I'm not sure if he meant it as was interpreted either. I think his apology and explanation of what he meant should be taken as it is or at the very least he's given a chance. Can't see him being cancelled because of it.

I 've thought for a while, that it was time he swallowed the mike and retired, and spent more time pruning his roses !

I do think this is more clumsy than anything else.
To put this in context had he said "We weren’t that long after Hillsborough and other issues as well, so it was very much a difficult time for the game generally" there would be no issue. I think he meant the 'other issues' were hooligan related and was a distinction between that and Hillsborough. Had he suggested Hillsborough was hooligan related though then there would rightly be no return for him.

This.
"Hillsborough and other, hooligan-related, issues"
Those subtle commas *separate* Hillsborough from the other issues but of course we don't see commas in speech. This is probably what he means by 'conflating'. He could have been clearer and more careful but it seems like he didn't mean it how it came across.

Tyler is a Varpool fan, there is no way he meant to insinuate their fans are hooligans, even though we know they are.

Don't interpret it. Read what he said. He may have put it wrongly, but taking him literally he associated Hillsborough with other hooligan related issues literally saying Hillsborough was a hooligan related issue.

Let’s wait for the permanently offended to take the worst possible interpretation of his comments and use it to demand the cancelling of a man who has been in football for a very long time, in which he has proved himself to be a thoroughly decent man.

I read it. I thought he meant Hillsborough and hooliganism as separate points. I think he was saying those times were difficult due to things like Hillsborough and also hooliganism.
