I think that it will prove to be a mistake making Odegaard captain as it makes him virtually undroppable. I thought that he was very poor last night. Poor creativity, reluctance to shoot when in on goal, doesnβt tackle. He did run a lot and close down. IMHO ESR is a far more threatening player who does shoot and does score goals but how will he displace Captain Odegaard when he is fit again?
I guess ESR will compete with Martinelli who apart from the goal was good helping the defence but not much of a threat up front.
I think we need someone who is strong, pacy , can get on the ball and spray passes about like Andersen did for Palace last night. Partey is slow and should he really be playing at the moment? Saka and Jesus were lively. White is not a RB . Saliba was immense, Gabriel, Xhaka and Zin were solid. Ramsdale made a couple of great saves after a few dodgy moments.
We badly need a fit Tomiyasu back and ESRβs goal threat. Still think Pepe should get more game time.

Ode is never going to win possession in midfield. However he will not give it away cheaply. The problem is we are failing to get quality ball to him. Thats the issue Arteta has to solve. Especially in away games.

The idea seems to be to push the entire team high and create patterns by dominating space, like City do. I think we were sort of doing that for 20 minutes or so last night but couldn’t keep control of the game after that. Sometimes you have to credit the other team playing well and putting you off even the best plans. Still a work in progress anyway.

I agree and the problem is the same one we've had since Wenger signed Xhaka. In my opinion the central midfield player tasked to transition from defence to attack has to be able to sit at times and then flip momentum and push forward at others. And these days still have the dynamism to execute an attacking press. imo Its why De Bruyne so critical to City. We lack that player. A Patrick Vieira type if you like.

ESR might be a better goal threat, but he's not very creative so it really depends on what we're willing to sacrifice.

Its ok. But in Arteta has a depth chart of players by position on a whiteboard. Odegaard and Smith-Rowe are no.10s. By all accounts ESR is one of the most creative players at Arsenal.

Ødegaard did not have a great game but he wasn’t as poor as you are suggesting.
As for Pepe getting more game time…yes, after a sale to another club !
