Forest v West Ham - Match Thread

Wow...that was intense!!! The atmosphere was like a carnival!! The sun was out...and...a combination of players nerves, player fitness, player performance and Newcastle being miles better than us led to a 2-0 win.

Game Overview:

The positives were our defensive resilience. Henderson, Colback, Mckenna, Williams and after a nervy start...Niakhate all had good games. The rest, not so much. Lingard being the worst, closely followed by Toffolo...and then the rest. Essentially, no midfield = no service.

Signings:

Freuler looks all but done and Dennis could be another, but LWB and AM remain the priority, with those two positions our current weak spots.

Your Opposition Story:

I have been looking forward to the West Ham game for 14 years. One of my best mates here is an ardent Hammers fan. A Sunday roast, will be followed by the game back at mine. He thinks they’ll lose.

Will West Ham start with Cornet, and us with Lingard? That will be a baptism of fire for him!

Form:

We both lost 2-0, so they sit one place below us. Haaland doing what he does best. Scoring a lot of goals. West Ham probably played better, as we couldn’t have been any poorer.

Team:

Hennessey and Richards remain sidelined, Yates might feature and Mangala to start in place of Colback. Awoniyi in place of Surridge.

Let’s hope Tik Tok and Toff have improved somewhat.

Prediction:

Heart says home win, with a boisterous crowd and some magic from somewhere forcing a 1-0 win. Head says we lose 2-0 again with a vastly improved performance, but zero end product.

COYRs!!!!!

Good win, definitely rode our luck with the penalty and two shots hitting the line. Niakhate had a poor game but sure he’ll improve. Thought Johnson and Lingard were starting to gel and looked dangerous. O’Brien and Williams were stand out players with Henderson. I do feel a bit concerned by our defence. Worrall is too slow and Toffollo caught out of position a few times. McKenna played quite well though. And good debut for Mangala.

Thought Niakahte did well. O’Brien was my MOTM just ahead of Williams, Mangala and Henderson. Mangala and Awoniyi added the physicality that was missing last week.

He got beaten and turned by Antonio and if it was a better striker we’d have conceded. Definitely needs to improve. Williams was superb and MoM for me, just ahead of O’Brien.

Niakhate was good in the air though and read the game well. Just worried he’ll struggle against these big number 9s

I find it interesting what some supporters tend to see and then interpret compared to what others may see and interpret

One thing we can be sure of - great atmosphere

WOW what a first home game back in the Prem. End up buying tickets in the Legends Lounge (justified on the savings from not paying prem prices the last 23 years). Our fans were incredible today and it was great to see the progress in the team in just 1 week. We played the ball around so much better and just looked like a more confident side. Still not quite as sharp on the passing as we need to be at this level but its definitely getting there. To weigh in on the Niakhate discussion I thought that in the second half time and again he was in the right position to clear the danger from the crosses in the box. yes he get turned a couple of times by Antonio but he also cut out a lot of dangerous balls. Mangala - beast of a player and looks like a great signing. The two lads from Huddersfield look like they are already playing for the shirt and Hendo clearly wants to prove a point. nail biting at times (come on this is Forest) but great to see the character and spirit of the team and the passion from the CG in full voice. The only thing missing was Sir Paul doing a rendition of mull of Kintyre but you can't have everything I guess. COYR

In addition to individual performances, we looked a better version of the team that got us promoted.

You can see why we’ll need all these signings as we play with an intensity that will exhaust our midfield and forward line.

If that’s us after two games then we’ll be frightening when we click.

Lingard probably our worst player, followed by Johnson and Worrall. Very impressed by everyone else.

Based on Everton’s performance in their last game I fancy our chances there.

Yes, we rode our luck a bit, but we deserved it on our overall performance.

I thought Johnson did ok, didn’t get much of the ball but made good runs. Also so calm when he took his chance just a shame it was offside. Lingard looks a little unfit but had some good movement at times. We do need someone to replace him later in games.

Yes absolutely and I do tend to see the negatives 🤣. We definitely rode our luck and West Ham were unlucky to hit shots off the bar on to the line twice. But we did look better side for long periods and when we’re sharper we’ll create chances. Really excited by this new Swiss midfielder. Just wonder how he fits in with Mangala and O’Brien who look great already.
