RWB

Read a tweet that if we were able to play Ivan Perisic at both LWB and RWB we would be unstoppable and while it was said in jest there is a certain ring of truth to it.

Conte has used various formations over the years but his obvious preference is 5-3-2 which is heavily reliant WBs for creativity. Overly reliant perhaps, and while Perisic has come in we are still massively lacking on the right side. Yes we’ve brought Spence but Conte doesn’t seem keen on him at the moment (he never has with young players) and Royal is just not a RWB and a 0/9 success rate at crosses so far shows that.

I don’t think the club are to blame here, how many suitable and available RWBs are knocking around, but I fear that as the season goes on this will become a problem and that is why it is so essential we bring in a creative midfielder so that we can switch to a 3-4-1-2 at times which Conte has deployed to good effect in the past. Hopefully we do something about this in the last few days of the window.

Perisic getting totally overrated by fans over a solid, but unspectacular, performance. He has a great left foot but looked extremely clumsy on the ball

Clumsy? Are you ok?

Let’s chill it’s only week 3 of the season. Spence will get his Chance.

Let’s remember Emerson agent said conte wanted him to stay and be number 1 maybe he was right all along
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That last statement makes me question Conte’s judgement massively, assuming it’s true.

A wing back is basically a modern day winger. Their average position isn’t far off the halfway line. 80% of their work is done going forward. When Royal goes over the halfway line, he gets altitude sickness. He checks back every single time to pass to either a defender or a midfielder. He’s not stretching teams in the same way Perisic is. If he overlapped more often, he’d create a lot more space for Kulu.

I’m sorry, the guy is just not good in that position. End of debate.

You also said Kulusevski and Bentancur were rubbish so I’ll take conte opinion over yours.

End of debate

Agreed. This is the frustrating part of Conte’s character - an unwillingness to show faith in certain players, to gamble a little. The whole world and his dog knows Royal is never going to set that position alight, as sound as he is defensively. He offers nothing going forward and that’s 80% of his job as a wing back.

You only have to look at Neco Williams at RWB for Forest to see what happens when a younger player is given the chance. He’s been their best player all season. Just try Spence out. His ceiling is much higher than Royal’s. Maybe play Royal when Romero is out and we have to play Sanchez such is his need for defensive support but have a bit of faith in young players or those that don’t necessarily appear to be your ‘type’ on paper. You never know, they might surprise you.

This is what gets me about Conte’s plan. The latest theory is that there appears to be a desire to only sign players over 6 foot and that he wants everyone on the pitch to be physically imposing. That’s all well and good but it’s worth mentioning that were it not for the talents of the diminutive Hazard in Conte’s Chelsea days, he’d have lost the title that year to us probably. Same for Eriksen. Didn’t like him at first at Inter and then had to play him owed to injuries and he kept his place. I just wish he wasn’t so stubborn regarding players AND formations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually like that Conte has shown faith in the players that finished last season well and got us CL. Royal was one of these players.

7 points out of 9, we cannot complain too much.

I’m sure Conte prioritizes points over performance. Performances will pick up over time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let’s be honest here, if Wolves or Chelsea had a decent striker, we’d be staring at 1 win from 3. We’ve been indifferent and it’s not some master plan by Conte, as much as his disciples would like to think it is. If we continue to play like we did in the last two games, we’re going to lose more than we win. Unless you’re picking up 9 points and utterly battering teams I think there’s room for tweaks and the RWB position is one of them. Conte is a ruthless man. This has nothing to do with keeping faith in the team that finished last year as some sort of reward. He’s just a naturally cautious man. Better the devil you know. He knows Royal is limited but the fact that he doesn’t know much about Spence I think terrifies him more.

I’d just him to have a little more faith at times. Try players out. It makes you wonder how many youngsters like Kane, Alli, Walker, Rose would have even got their chance under a manager like Conte were he around during their youth.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
“If”

It’s like saying if we had prime Messi instead of an off for son, we’d be sitting on 9 points!

It’s a good sign that we’re not on fire, yet picking up near maximum points.

When we start firing on all cylinders, hopefully we’ll put teams away early.

I actually never said that. I was maybe a little underwhelmed that we’d signed two relative unknowns and I still don’t think Bentancur is amazing, just tidy. Kulu is brilliant though, no debate. I’m making the judgement on Royal having seen the guy for a full season. There’s a big difference.

Yeh we let Tripps go after an indifferent season when he was, by all accounts, playing with an injury for most of it.

We then replaced him with Aurier, Doherty and Royal, none of whom are as good. Ridiculous decision making,
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh how we could do with Trippier right now. He’d be awesome under Conte.

Players like Spence need to be playing weekly at that age if they are to fully develop there potential, training and sitting on the bench for weeks will not help him progress, it has the opposite effect you loose all the confidence you gained from playing regularly

Why isn't Spence playing?

Conte loyal to last seasons players but as seen with Sessegnon. The loyalty will soon end
