For whatever reason, Iran folded defensively under pressure from England and England looked a decent side. Give them space to operate in and the likes of Mount and Saka look ok. Put them under pressure and they don't. Bellingham was able to play box to box in the first game and it gave England options, last night he could not and it exposed the limitations of Mount, Sterling and Saka.

Assuming that Wales remain unable to string passes together England do not need 2 DM's as it stifles the attack. Yes Foden is streets ahead of Mount but 1 attack minded midfielder and wingers not making much impression won't bring much success.

But yes, second may actually be better!

Any winger is going to struggle if the fullback is not providing adequate support in the form of overlapping runs and there wasn't much of that going on at all. In order to create space you have to move the ball quickly to drag players out of position and again that simply didn't happen. The amount of times the defenders were just passing the ball back and forth between themselves was just unacceptable players have got to show for the ball and that clearly wasn't happening. We've got some really talented players but they are just being wasted under this regime. The quicker it's changed the better.

Not sure the point you are trying to make, Foden, like all City players except Haaland plays in every position in the front 5, City rotate throught the game.

I heard him after the match saying that they’d chosen Grealish and Rashford and they’d have been criticised if whoever they hadn’t chosen.

Thought that was very telling that he didn’t even seemingly consider Foden for Mount. Not sure Southgate realises how much that shows his own limitations. I’d have even considered him for Kane, then have Rashford and Mount running through.
