It always feels like more people die around Christmas than at any other time of the year and it seems more poignant at this time.
OK the weather may be contributory but a more acute feeling of loneliness is often cited as is finally giving up after reaching the target of one more Christmas.
Two of my grandparents, who had been married for 70 years, died within 10 days of each other over the Christmas period. My grandfather went first from an existing medical condition and my grandmother, who was slightly overweight but otherwise healthy, followed 10 days later. The doctor said that she had just "given-up" and died of a broken heart.
My wife was diagnosed with cancer on New Years' Eve and this is my 15th year without her but I will wish her a Merry Christmas on Sunday morning as always.
So best wishes to all for a good Christmas and especially to those, and their loved ones, who will be going through a difficult emotional time.

Dad died in 1996, aged 80. Mum died in 2015, aged 95. Both had a decent Innings.
