You've just made the point yourself with the reference to how I, the ref and VAR team can tell what a players intentions are from the way he heads the ball

It's purely down to how the situation is interpreted.

For me it should be pretty simple...if a player is offside when the ball is played through, and a defender tries to stop the forward pass and makes an erse of it, if the player who is offside is the first person to touch the ball after that point....he's still offside.

If anyone else touches it, that's when your second phase begins...job done
