Top 10 British footballers ever...

With the news Gareth Bale has retired, it got me thinking who the greatest British footballer of all time is.

This is not an easy task but I have come up with my top 10 British footballers, which I have restricted to players no longer playing, as it is unfair to rate players still plying their trade.

In alphabetical order:

Gareth Bale
George Best
Bobby Charlton
Kenny Dalglish
Paul Gascoigne
Ryan Giggs
Jimmy Greaves
Stanley Mathews
Bobby Moore
Billy Wright

Agree, disagree?

Jimmy Greaves is the first name that springs to mind (mine, anyway), then Bobby Moore & Bobby Charlton. 7 more to consider from the many superstars over the years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thing with Greaves is that he lost his place in the England team to Geoff Hurst in 1966, and they won it all without him.

If Greaves had fired England to World Cup glory, he’d be #1 for me ahead of Bobby Charlton.

I feel Rooney gets overlooked in these discussions. He was dynamite when he was younger and dominated the PL with Man Utd.

Obviously Bale’s 5 CL titles and multiple La Liga titles, with all the iconic moments, is up there as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I base my choice of these three outstanding footballers on many years of having seen them play “live” and by way of appearing on televised matches. Greavesie only lost his place to Geoff Hurst because of an injury suffered in the World Cup group game against France, if I am correct.

I saw him play many times after the ‘66 World Cup and for 3-4 years thereafter I considered him still the top striker in England and the player I feared the most coming to our home matches. He had lost none, or very little, of the elegance, killer instinct, sheer skill and effortless movement that made him an instant choice for the England team in the years leading up to ‘66 and that’s the reason his name would be the first to appear on a starting eleven, certainly as far as I’m concerned.

I have been considering Wayne, you know 😉

Very difficult to pick the top 10 of my lifetime. But no modern player would get in. To many other great British players of the 20th century

In no particular order

Matthews
Finney
Edwards
Mackay
White
Blanchflower
Greaves
Law
Best
Charlton

I could easily pick another 20 or 30.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, everyone who has played after 1975 is crap.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ace, I didn't say that. It is you that has a weird obsession that if they didn't play in the 21st century then they must be crap.

Just try not to be so envious of supporters that have been there, seen more than you have.
