A penny for Henderson's thoughts

Among all the mad chaos of the closing transfer window, I didn't noticed until today that Nottingham Forest have just signed Keylor Navas. Having gone on loan amid a fairly public tantrum about his treatment by United, I wonder what Dean Henderson is thinking now.

To recap, on returning from his Sheffield United loan, he finished the 2020-21 season looking as though he might be winning the battle to be United's first choice keeper and was happy to stay on. He missed the start of the following season with illness/injury and never managed to reclaim the starting spot. He was bitter about the club's failure to meet the assurances he felt he had been given, and on moving to Forest suggested he would love to be able to play against his parent club. In January he sustained an injury that will see him miss the next month, and when he is available to play again, he'll be up against a three-time Champions League winning goalkeeper.

Life has a habit of serving up ironic patterns, doesn't it?

I hope we can do better than Pickford. Even though he’s not bad for England I still don’t rate him that much. And like you say has a very punchable face.

I wouldn’t sign him, but I think Pickford is really underrated. People only talk about him good (some stupidly question his place there) but he’s been in really good form for Everton for a couple of years now, after a dodgy patch of form for about a year and a half before that.

If Everton stay up I can see him replacing Pickford.

I'd like to see Everton relegated. (And Forest stay up.)

Henderson is obviously a decent keeper, but as previously said he thinks he is a lot better than he actually is. Overall I don't think he is good enough for us, and we should be looking to getting a good fee for him in the summer.

I wouldn't be going anywhere near Pickford either, I have no idea what people see in him to make them think he should be at a top club.

It's a bit arbitrary, I suppose. There's a kind of rational side in that I feel like they kind of deserve it based on narrowly escaping many times over the years and the owner deserves it due to grossly unprofessional stewardship. Then there's also a purely irrational aspect of tribal schadenfreude, which occurs with any club we've been playing for as long as I can remember: they have never been a key rival, but if you play each other enough times, there will be a few matches where we're on the wrong side of an acrimonious defeat or we've dropped costly points. It's not an admirable impulse on my part, and I'm aware it must be devastating for the fans.

It seems from what I heard last night that Henderson's injury is worse than what was initially reported, which makes sense. I can't see that they would have brought Navas in if he was only going to be out for a few weeks.

They cost us the title in 2012. The chickens are coming home to roost.
