Leeds Utd v Forest Matchday Thread

Welcome to the Matchday Thread and (hopefully) a chance to get our season back on track with a nice Away Win
Forest a seriously reinforced side since they won promotion (29 signings 🙄) will be looking to improve their own position so I expect this to be a tough test

Venue...The City Ground...Date...th Feb...Kick Off..1400hrs.

Team News
Leeds United
Leeds will be without Rodrigo for two months because of an ankle injury, while Robin Koch is suspended after accumulating five yellow cards.

USA international Weston McKennie could make his debut after joining on loan from Juventus.

Crysencio Summerville, Liam Cooper, Tyler Adams and Pascal Struijk return from injury but Adam Forshaw and Stuart Dallas are still out.

Forest
Forest could include a number of recent signings but will be without Ryan Yates (illness), Morgan Gibbs-White (ankle) and Dean Henderson (ankle).

They brought in Keylor Navas, Felipe and Jonjo Shelvey on deadline day and then added Andre Ayew on a free transfer on Thursday.

The club are waiting on Jesse Lingard's fitness after he was injured in the warm-up for the Carabao Cup game against Manchester United and he could join a lengthy injury list.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
Leeds are winless in 12 top-flight matches away to Nottingham Forest since a 2-0 victory in November 1971, when Peter Lorimer and Allan Clarke were on target (D7, L5).
The Whites' only previous top-flight wins away to Forest all came with either Don Revie as manager (five victories between 1966 and 1971) or Revie in the starting line-up as a player (one win in 1959).
The Yorkshire club have won two of their last 15 league fixtures against Forest (D6, L7), with all those games coming in the Championship.

Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest have only lost twice in 10 Premier League matches and are unbeaten in four top-flight fixtures in 2023 (W2, D2).
Forest lost three of their opening four home league games in 2022-23 but are unbeaten in their subsequent six.
Steve Cooper's side have scored the opening goal in eight of their 10 Premier League home matches this season, a joint high prior to the latest round of fixtures.
They have recorded 64 shots on target, the lowest figure in the top flight this term.

Leeds United
Leeds have won all five of their Premier League away matches against newly promoted opposition since returning to the top flight in 2020, scoring 14 goals and conceding three.
They have claimed five points away from home this season, a joint low with Bournemouth and West Ham prior to the weekend.
Jesse Marsch's side have only won two of their last 16 league games (D5, L9).
They attempted just two shots from inside the penalty area during the goalless draw with Brentford, their lowest figure in a league match this season.

Not a great away record against Forest but we certainly need to be getting a result here with a couple of tough games coming up, Jesse has to get his tactics and Subs right for this one.
Can't see this being a clean sheet so I'm going for the good old 1-2 Scoreline with Paddy getting both 😃

On the evidence of today I'm sorry but Bamford just doesn't cut it at Premiership level any more. First touch of a Sunday morning footballer.

We're going to miss Rodrigo massively I'm afraid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was no worse than any of our other forwards

Gnonto had chances and his first touch was poor today, but he ain't slated like bamford is.

Bamford starts his first game in months and looked like it, whats the excuse for every other player on the pitch today? And why don't they get signaled out in the same way.

Bamford was not at his best today but the way he gets blamed more than others... Jeez Louise...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, he was utter garbage. Can't use the language suitable unfortunately.

Rodrigo plays, we win that game.

Cooper in a completely different league compared to Marsch
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Certainly will be next season (sorry, couldn’t resist that).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sadly you may be very right about that.

On Bamford versus Gnonto and critisism.

Gnonto just turned 19. Bamford is an experienced player, and thus one is expecting a little more from him, when it comes to first touches, no?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That would be the Italy international who has played regular football for two seasons now vs the guy starting his first premier League games since October...

Yes, yes I would expect more from him on his first touch, or at least expect him not to be as bad as the guy coming back from injury

Bamford gets slated because he is a centre-forward. His job is to score goals. He missed two great goal scoring opportunities.
Gnonto is a winger. He got one shot on target and set up two great opportunities, for Sini and Bamford. Who do you think wants to win more, White?

Bamford set up Sini for his first chance. Other than that his first touch was poor. However we were much worse when he went off.

Well, the thing is that Bamford has had a poor first touch in general, and not just now when he's returned from injury

Bamford was top of the opportunities missed stats before his injury. He just extended that lead today.

It seems like there are only 2 extreme views of PB.

Either he is our most important player, makes us much better, leads the line bringing others into play, holds the ball up has a touch of class etc.

The opposing view is, he is overrated, always injured or off the boil because he is returning from injury, misses gilt edged chances, terrible first touch etc.

The truth is probably somewhere between the 2 extremes but at the moment we need somebody to step up and start to dominate an opposition defence. We are just so easy to defend against

He is one of our most important players. He does make us much better. And he does bring others into play.

He also does have a poor touch and does miss chances. He’s also had a terrible injury record.

All of this can be and is true at the same time.

Unfortunately it seems most people can’t understand that.

Game was lost in the first half. Cooper isn't daft, he parked 2 buses second half & we made no headway either before or after Bamford was finally subbed.

He's been a good servant but sorry to say Premiership is too high a level for Bamford now. He already cost us points earlier in the season but people were allowing themselves to be carried away by his performances against Cardiff & Accrington. Apart from the number of awful first touches today, which I lost count of, the swing & miss was embarrassing.

Admittedly Sinisterra missed our best chance. He's also just coming back from injury so maybe that lets him off the hook too? 🤷‍♂️

I admit I’m pretty useless when it comes to tactics but am I mistaken in thinking we don’t cross the ball when we have the chance, but instead all too often try to walk it in, but without nous to know how to do that? Even the best teams in this league whip the ball in at almost every opportunity while we seem to f@nny around with it until we lose it. A generalisation, I know, but you get the gist.
