Europa Last 16

Interesting night of football ahead, with 7 of the ties very much in the balance. The draw for the Europa last 16 is tomorrow and we can face any of the winners tonight - bar Man Utd if they win.

The Man Utd-Barca (2-2) game is particularly interesting from an Arsenal point of view. Arguably the 2 teams we would least like to face going forward in terms of quality. If United win, as I say, we cannot face them in the next round and in terms of the PL title race it will be good if United have eggs in as many baskets as possible. Barca would be a glamour tie, and a bit of a distraction from the PL - not sure if that would be a positive or negative.

Juventus are having a terrible season, both on and off the pitch, and they go to France to face Nantes after a 1-1 draw in Turin. Nantes are a pretty average side themselves. The French side would arguably be the dream draw.

Sporting and Midtjylland are also level at 1-1 as they meet in Denmark. Sporting have already had success against our esteemed neighbours, beating Spurs 2-0 in Portugal and drawing 1-1 in North London. A trip to Denmark is perhaps low down on the desires of Arsenal.

Rennes go into their home leg 2-1 down, and have had a pretty rough time in domestic football since the World Cup - however still sit 5th. Their opponents, Shakhtar Donetsk, are in a difficult situation due to the ongoing troubles in Ukraine. With a lack of domestic football, Donetsk may be out of match practice - but that didn't show in their win in the Polish capital over Rennes.

Union Berlin are flying high in the Bundesliga - level on points with Bayern and Dortmund. The weekend draw with Schalke was their first points dropped since the WC (5 wins). However it was also their second 0-0 in a row after drawing the first leg with Ajax in a goalless match. The Dutch side have won their last 4 Eredivisie games, scoring 16, as they have refound form after 4 draws in 4 games after the WC.

Monaco host Leverkusen, with the French side 3-2 up. Bayer are in poor domestic form, while Monaco's only defeat since the restart was a Coupe de France shock against Rodez of Ligue 2. They have won 8 of the other 10 games they have played since the WC.

Despite being in a relegation battle in La Liga, Sevilla romped to a 3-0 win over PSV in the first leg. PSV, who came second to us in the groups, have had mixed form in Eredivisie, and have fallen to 4th. Looks like Europa specialists Sevilla will be progressing.

Red Bull Salzburg travel to Rome with a 1-0 lead. The Austrian league has only just restarted, so they may have some freshness. Roma have been pretty decent since the WC and will fancy their chances of overturning the deficit.

Union Saint-Gilloise, SC Freiburg, Ferencvaros, Feyenoord, Real Betis, Real Sociedad and Fenerbache are the teams who join Arsenal in the seeded pot.

The draw is on BT Sport 1 at 11am (only half hour show so should be quick).

Kind of want Barca, tbh. One, it means United are out. Two, I actually think the distraction will be positive. Three, if we get knocked out then less games.

Nantes look to be the "easiest" possible tie, although we really should be favourites against any of the rest.

It could well be one of the strongest Europa last 16’s in recent memory.

United getting put out while still in a title race with you lot still in isn't ideal.

Some very good teams there - Sevilla of course being absolute specialists in this comp

The introduction of the conference league as well as jigging the EL format seems to have had a really positive impact on the competition.

With 7 teams in the PL now generally expecting CL football, I expect we will see a rise in how the Europa League is regarded. 7 doesn't go into 4 and with the format being much better, I think the Europa will start to increase in people's opinions and become much less of a competition that is sneered at.

I think it more likely that CL places will increase - in fact I expect there to be 6 places available in England within the next 5 years - we’re the money and that’s who the Europeans want and need to play

Would they want to devalue the Europa by making it the 7th and 8th best English clubs (and assumably same for Italy, Spain and Germany)?

Pretty much every seeded team looks garbage. Once again Europa looks set to be dominated by CL dropouts
