How anyone doesn't see that as a straight red is just blinkered. Shocking tackle and clildnhave broken his ankle.

As for refs, we had Pawson at the weekend and he is one of the worst, weakest old woman of a ref going. Gives every single soft foul as a foul, gives every other foul as a yellow. Never let's play flow. Always completely suckered in to diving. Cannot stand him and it is little wonder he rarely gets the big games. He's useless

This. It's basically impossible not to jump into a slide while running; and what distinguishes running from walking is the flight phase where both feel are off the ground. By the time Casemiro makes contact, his left foot is just trailing along the ground and simply irrelevant to the challenge.

By the time he made physical contact with ball and player, his back foot may have been in contact with the floor. I wasn’t sure about that looking at it again.

Doesn’t make any difference to me either way, though; he embarked on the challenge with both feet off the ground - he literally jumped into it -, which means that he’d already given up a significant amount of control to gravity.

It’s perfectly possible to drop rather than jump into a slide; I’ve done it myself a hundred times.

As for W-P, he’s coming from behind Garnacho, goes with one leg either side of Garnacho’s right peg, then rotates his body and legs to turn his legs against Garnacho’s.

Tackling from behind isn’t dangerous, per se; neither is going one leg either side or rotating your body through a challenge. But when you combine all those elements, it’s dangerous.

I honestly think if that had been given as a penalty and red card, people would be putting it up there with Pedro Mendes/Roy Carroll in terms of soft decisions at Old Trafford.

He does drop into it. I almost said he "jumps downwards" but didn't as it sounds a bit daft, but that's what he did. As I say, running = both feet off the ground at times or it isn't running, it's walking. His left foot is as trailing on the floor by the time contact is made. It's not even a remotely reckless lunge, though I don't ultimately debate the red as his right studs made contact.

Yes, on second thoughts, I suppose there is the AWB-type slide, where you're running alongside the attacker and drop into the tackle; but often the going to ground occurs as or even after you play the ball there. Still think Casemiro didn't lunge.
