Let me first start by doing my annual ‘you must watch Ted Lasso’ as it’s truly one of the best shows on TV and as football supporters it’s such a great watch. Season 3 starts tomorrow. Brilliant brilliant show. Please. Watch.
Anyway, best sports movies. For me..
Remember the Titans
White Men Can’t Jump
The Longest Yard (2005) - a guilty pleasure
Gregory’s Girl
Rocky
Raging Bull
Happy Gilmore
Cool Runnings
Dodgeball
Kingpin
I’m sure there’s more. Your choices? And why is it so hard to make a great football movie?

Well before anyone loses their minds, I was more of a Seagal fan. Cos his style I thought I could do that... and I run better than him.
Obviously I was conned, cos indeed Van Damme is a legend, and he came up against some tough competition at the time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the reality is that in real life Seagal would had destroyed Van Damme
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s actually very much fake news. Van Damme was a legitimate champion kick-boxer.
A few years ago Stallone did this hugely honest Q&A session with aintitcool news and told this great story about how in the 90s all the action stars used to pretty much attend a lot of the same parties. One night in Miami if I remember correctly Seagal was boasting that he could take Van Damme and when Van Damme turned up a bit later he was told this and kicked off (no pun intended) and tried to find Seagal who by all accounts had driven off and Van Damme - according to Stallone - spent all night trying to find him to smash his face in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Again... I was apart of that crowd that also believed Seagal could whoop on Van Damme.
A few sessions of therapy later, I’m all good now...

I’m a freak and I like the Kick-boxer sequels with Sasha Mitchell. But if we’re talking martial arts (American) movies then the Perfect Weapon with Jeff Speakman is the real GOAT. That guy was a machine.

Van Damme was a gymnast who also did some karate and kick boxing. there is no official tournament info on him competing but he was trained.
Segal at his peak was pretty legit man, he wsa the first westerner to be granted permission to teach in Japan im sure? he wouldnt have gotten permission if he wasnt legit.
plus he was a big dude is he not 6'5 or something?
He was a genuine Aikido master.
then he became a fat mess, who still to this day hasnt mastered the art of shouting or raising his voice in anyway

Also loved the Brandon Lee movies Showdown in Little Tokyo w/ Dolph Lundgren and Rapid Fire. He was such a talent back then and could have been the biggest star in the world 😢

Random shout out to Andrei Arlovski in the underrated Universal Soldier: Regeneration.
Not the most technically sound performance (), but as far as pure hard-as-facking-titanium, unrelenting pummeling goes, it's top of the list for me.
