Sven Considering Changing Team & Formation

http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/Sven-Goran-Eriksson-thinks-changing-winning/story-13493561-detail/story.html

I for one was someone who said that there should be no debate over the starting XI for the next match because nobody deserves to lose their place, therefore there is no need for change - no matter the name or reputation of the players coming back from injury.

Also, it's clear that the diamond is our best formation and certainly is what the players prefer playing in (they've even said as much) and we seem to have found a nice balance between attack and defence since we've played the diamond for 90 minutes. So why change??

If there is one thing that does annoy me at times with Sven is that his tinkering when it isn't needed and the fact that at times he does tend to pick players on reputation over form.

Also, Andy King has picked up a back injury and has been ruled out for Wales. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15096261.stm

Thoughts.

If he switches back to 4-3-3 now, after seeing steady improvement since the penny finally dropped - then he is an idiot.

However, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and suggest that this was probably a "never say never" answer to a speculative question.

More journalistic chip-paper. Along with that ridiculous Beckham story - that's two in two days.

Nothing to write about boys?

Absolutely, fatfox.

There's loads of ways this could be read into:

1) It's true and he's thinking about going 4-3-3 for the next match

2) He's confusing the opposition and disguising the actual line up

3) He's just been dangled a carrot and taking little nibbles - metaphorically speaking (as fatfox explained)

4) There's nothing else to write about / discuss during the international break

5) It's not his immediate plan of action for the next few games but he's not ruling this formation out completely

An Idiot - Dublin bay Prawn.

A polygot who's brought in good players made them work and pushing us up the league. Its your opinion but i trust his judgment and he's not let us down.

I for one want to see three up front with Vasell widsish and Beckford and Nugent running amoke....but thats my opinion and maybe that idoits Svens opinion?

To be honest, there is a possibility that a 3 of Vassell, Beckford and Nugent may work. And whilst it is hard to ignore how much better we have been playing in a 4-4-2, it would perhaps be just as narrow-minded to completely ignore the possibility of the above three.

But hey, we have all wondered if Sven has a plan B, and there is going to be a game that comes round when we aren't playing very well in a diamond, at which point we may look to try this three-pronged attack.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree that you should 'never' change a winning team, at the minute, I think there are too many midfielders playing well to justify a formation change and barring injury, I think the only first 11 change next week will be Wellens in for Abe.

'and the 'best' they can get out of him is basically "Sure – one of these days".'

But he doesn't say 'sure - one of these days'.

He says 'I am quite sure you will see all three of them on the pitch'.

And 'I think they can play together.'

To me, it's quite clear not just from this but from the whole season so far, that he is desperate to play 4-3-3 with those 3 up front.

I think he'll keep it the same for Birmingham, but if we have 2 or even 1 bad performance/result, he'll use it as justification for using 4-3-3 and he'll change.

Emilio – well, if you want to go by what he doesn't say, then he doesn't say 'in a 4-3-3 line-up'. Or 'all playing as forwards'. Or 'in a starting eleven'.

Maybe he means that we are likely to see 'all three of them on the pitch' for the last 10 minutes of a game where we are urgently chasing a late goal. Or maybe he means 'they can play together' as two strikers and the front man in a diamond midfield. Or two as the middle pairing in a 4-1-4-1.

Maybe he's merely thinking 'yes, it's bound to be the case some time before the end of the season – there are still nearly 40 games to go, and with injuries and suspensions, stranger things than that will happen'. Or maybe he means 'I really must try that in an FA Cup game against lower league opposition'.

It's hard to tell, really – for those of us who aren't psychic…

Well those are possibilities fatfox, but it's more likely that he means he's planning to start them all (and whatever formation I don't think this would work) considering his stubbornness in the past and also because I think he'd make a point of being specific if he did mean one of those other things. He's also heavily implied that he would start them all at once a number of times recently.

He didn't have to say anything at all, even if they asked him directly he could just say 'it's a possibility' or 'we'll see'.

Svennis does tend to be fairly open with the media.

I will be very surprised if I don't see Beckford, Nugent and Vassell as the forward line in a 4-3-3 very soon, but we shall see ...
