Not Syria but it amazes me that Afghanistan used to be a popular travel destination for Hippies in the 60s/70s.

Imagine how they would deal with them now..

There was a Scottish guy doing travel videos of him in Damascus recently, he said Cairo was dodgier.

There’s quite a lot of YouTube backpackers doing Afghanistan (Syria & Ukraine, too). Tourism is generally welcomed by the Taliban, though obviously you can’t mess around and you’ll need a fixer/local to help you get around.

There’s a video series by one US couple - husband & wife I think - and at some point they’re sat on the roadside sharing tea with the Taliban. It’s not what I would have expected to see but it’s always nice to see prevailing narratives & ideas challenged in this way.

Still not sure I’d go myself though!

Afghanistan is easy to get into and they are very friendly. I stood at a restricted site in Tajikistan looking at Afghanistan once but had no time to get over the border sadly.

A good tour group for getting you into dodgy countries is Lupine. They advertise certain countries but also do several trips in secret so as not to alert terrorism in some countries.
