How much in reality do you think midweek games and playing in a lot of competitions affects players in reality? I think that in the past when players didn't work on fitness so much, this was big factor. Nowdays, IMO playing this much games doesn't affect players very much. City played tough game at Bernabeu, and I don't see any of their players have problems because they player 4 days ago. Yes they rested few players, but it is more precaution than necessity.

It's more about mental fatigue than physical fatigue.

People have written academic papers on the subject, and the data says yes, it does.
Although playing midweek games doesn’t appear to have any direct result on the following weekend’s fixture, the addition of extra midweek games does negatively affect the number of points a team collects over the course of a season.
One study looking at a decade of data found that just by qualifying for Europe (CL or EL), looking at all qualifiers (so not just those who went deep in the competition), on average teams lose around three to four points over the course of a season (95% CI).
The study didn’t adjust for domestic cup games, but I imagine if you looked at teams that went deep in domestic cups *and* deep into European competition, you’d see that 3 to 4 points increase substantially.

People only moan about too many games when they are losing etc - the nature of football is that the more successful you are, the more games you play. Naturally you want a squad to be able to deal with that, but injuries will happen regardless.
The same argument of too many games causes fatigue etc is flipped on its head if a team is doing well and suddenly 'it's great for the squad to be challenging on so many fronts'.
For me, they should show more flexibility in playing rearranged games earlier, rather than cramming them all in the final 2 or 3 weeks of the season
