City have basically been playing without fullbacks for a while now and deploy 3CB's with a further CB (Stones) being played further ahead in a midfield hybrid role.
With the news we are close to signing Kim Min Jae from Napoli.....I wonder if this could be Erik's plan. He's apparently been very progressive for Napoli this season and has an insanely high number of passes in the opposing half of the field. The most in the league I think it was which is a bit mental for a so called CB.
---------------Martinez------Varane-------Shaw
-----------------------Kim--------Casemiro
Antony/Amad------Mount-----Bruno-----Rashford/Garnacho
-----------------------New striker / Rashford
Its probably not the plan but I actually don't mind it. I don't particularly rate any of our fullbacks that highly except Shaw and he's proven he can play at CB very well anyway.
City's new formation- could it work for us?

I’m still fecking astounded it works for us. Best of British with that one, Harry McGuire in the Stones role?

I still think a really big problem for us is the lack of width we have. This wouldn’t really solve it, especially as Garnacho and Rashford are the only players that can reliably beat their man one on one and neither play on the right.
Never a fan of these ideas of copying City’s tactical set ups anyway. They have the best coach in the world to make it work and lots of fantastic players. It’s not something that is easily replicable.

And our system does change a fair bit depending on who he plays too.

City are a well oiled machine so it’s easier to implement these changes as you do.

We've been over this issue many times through the decades. It's pretty basic stuff.
A back 3 is a great option to have, and it would suit United's, historically present, creative and dynamic footballing 'philosophy', a philosophy present at United at a level higher than any other english league club.
BUT it is ONLY viable with a sensible goalkeeper and at least 3 proper cbs (to legislate for possible injuries).
United haven't had that suitation for over a decade, largely because the club has lost sight of that footballing philosophy - hopefully only temporarily.
Would love to see it, but huge changes need to be made in personnel before it can even be considered.

There's lots of things we could do to improve the use of our current shape never mind trying to implement a completely new one with players out of position. The lack of dynamic and/or hard-working wide players would be an issue too.
Also as much as I rate Ten Hag, he's not Pep.

For the first time in a while I'm interested in how this manager grows us tactically.

You hope. Serious question, could he have been better in a more stable better run club? He was very highly rated - he was even touted as a replacement for Kompany at City.

Doesn't have the pace to play CB in any system other than a deep line.
He'd have looked better under LVG than he does ETH for that very reason.
