One major signing - what do you choose?

If we are only able to make one more major signing (forget the money / FFP side of things) this summer for the start of next season and it was up to you whether we signed a new GK or a CF - which would you choose?

Feel free to list specific players as a basis of your choice ie. Kane or Onana let’s say or whomever you wish but my query is - if we could strengthen only one of those two positions - which would you choose?

For me, it would be CF. I agree with most that DDG simply lacks what is required of a top level GK currently (ie distribution, playing it out from the back etc) but if I had to choose, I’d keep David if it meant us getting a proper CF that suited / improved our game.

We’ve already seen that with our improved defence with Martinez, Shaw, Varane (even Lindelof without Maguire) and Casemiro protecting that we can do ok defensively with a keeper like De Gea. But goals were our problem. Just think what would have happened without RashFord’s purple patch last season. Think what it could be like with, heck I’ll just say it, Harry Kane playing with Rashy, Bruno, Garnacho, Eriksen, Mount.

So - one or the other, player specific or just generally on position - what are you choosing, GK or CF?

The problem with getting a striker at the moment is the two that guarantee goals are probably not achievable.

Kane and Oshimen both going to be too expensive.

After that your still paying big money around 70m for second rate strikers or potential like Hojlund or Ramos. Still it has to be the position United get someone in.

Surprised they didn't try for Thuram on a free would have been a sensible option.

Kluivert is primarily a wide player. We have enough of those. If we are going to be signing a forward it needs to be a proper no.9.

I wouldn't be against IvanToney if we can't get anyone else in before the end of the Summer. I know he wouldn't be available until 2024 but if ETH thinks he could be a long term option it'd be worth waiting. If we buy him late Summer we could perhaps send someone to them on loan to sweeten the deal.

Kluivert?

Assuming you're mixing up your second-generation footballers, from what I've read, Marcus Thuram has mainly played as a CF over the last season, though played more on the left in the past. He's had decent reviews, and I thought he might be a sensible acquisition at least as a second choice striker. The fact that we didn't go for him (nor any other PL teams) on a free suggests some doubts about his ceiling as a player. I wonder if it also signals that we're not optimistic of shipping Martial this summer.

Keeper, would make a bigger difference to our style of football.

Nonsense.

A CF who can score 35-40 a season would make a far bigger difference.

Costa or Onana.

GK. In Thuram and Dembele there are decent free transfer options for a CF.

Left back.

Funny how Luke Shaw's career seems to have a curiously binary pattern when it comes to significant injury layoffs. One every other season.

2022/23 - 31 league appearances.
21/22. -20
20/21. -32
19/20. -24
18/19. 29
17/18. 11

Like clockwork.

Tick. Tock.

Poor lad.
