Is he any good?

Lot of talk about a potential deal for Onana, with some fans very excited about such a a deal happening, so I just thought I'd ask those in the know, just how good he is. Below are some key attributes required from a GK, so it would be good if we could rate him on these.

Feel free to also rate DDG on these for comparison if it helps.

Shot stopping

Claiming high balls

Sweeping

Error rate

Kicking / passing

Availability

Communication

Experience

Onana has strong distribution skills. He regularly comes out of his box to help build-up play and is known for his confidence on the ball and range of passing. In Cameroon's opening 2022 World Cup game against Switzerland, Onana had more touches of the ball outside of the box (26) than any goalkeeper in a World Cup match since records began in 1966. He was described as resembling a "holding midfielder at times" in UEFA's Technical Observers' report on the 2022–23 Champions League.

So in that respect, he's literally the anti_DDG

This makes it sound like back in '66 they were already recording number of touches by the 'keeper outside the box, when it seems more likely that they've kept similar stats for a few years now, and for the rest we're just relying on the fact that it was something they just didn't do much until fairly recently.

Or they've just watched the games back, years later.

I do think we’d face less shots against us if our back four including the keeper as a unit lost the ball in our half less often, and we’re better at coping when being pressed. Most of the times DDG is called into action it’s because they’ve fcked up in a dangerous area.

A keeper the defence aren’t frightened of having to pass to, or knowing he’ll be there behind them to sweep would go a long way to helping us dominate the ‘lesser’ sides for longer periods.

He combines stats with context around potential playing styles etc to talk through his strengths and weaknesses and how he might work in this United team.

He might not be super accurate or whatever but you'll get a far better analysis and account than you will on here.

No, "since records began in 1966" makes it sound like they are going on stuff they started recording in 1966.

No time for any context or that factual analysis malarkey, just need to know whether he’s absolute dross or a generational talent so here’s fine thank you very much.

De Gea is staying though is he not? About 45 hours ago I was reliably informed on ja606 that he would be signing a new contract in the next 48 hours.

Another one he's been wrong on this window it would appear
