Today it seems Southampton have turned down substantial bids for James Ward Prowse and Romeo Lavia. With just a couple of days to go until they kick off the EFL season away to Sheffield Wednesday they haven't sold any of the players expected to go for decent money (Livramento, Tella, Salisu, Bella-Kotchup etc).
While they don't want to lose their talent on the cheap, they are either playing a dangerous game or the owners are playing a clever one where they get to keep the profits!!
Fellow relegated side Leicester were quick to shift some big names (Maddison, Barnes, etc) and buy players who should stand out at this level (eg Winks and Coady). While they want more they are less likely to see great disruption in the first weeks.
Are Southampton risking a good start with their stance?
Southampton, brave, stupid or other?

On Lavia, to me they are playing a risky game. Liverpool have offered an insane amount for a 1 season premier playing 19yr old.
Wouldn't surprise me if lavia says right fk it, you were offered £43M for me...I want to go, you turned it down...I'm downing tools, miss training and basically behaves appallingly. Tbh...I couldn't blame him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I really hope not. Always thought players that down tools are fecking pr’cks and, sorry to say GB, fans that encourage it, not much better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well tbh....if ur being held again your will, and the club have recieved a more than generous fee for you...its unfair on the player imo and he would have every right to kick up a fuss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not too dissimilar to say Gerrard to Chelsea or Suarez to Arsenal then GB...

Ronaldo to Madrid

This move actually happened though

If they can retain their best players then they really should be coming back up again, which will not only benefit them financially in and of itself, but those same players will be worth more money for prospective buyers if they are back in the PL by next summer.
Equally, those same players got relegated from the PL, so they've much to prove. At least with the Leicester players they've previously shown serious PL & in many case international pedigree prior to last season's collapse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If they keep them then it is a statement of intent. I just can't see it happening and think they will sell late on with little to no chance of getting in replacements. Which may be the money mens plans.

There is nothing more frustrating when supporting a 'small' club than seeing your best players hoovered up by the big boys. When you look at the roll call of players Southampton have sold over the years it is jaw dropping. Maybe if they's held on to even a few of them they'd be in a better position than they are now.

I was at Southampton vs AZ Alkmaar at the weekend.
Southampton looked dreadful, even with Ward-Prowse (Lavia replaced him after 78 minutes).
Tella looked a handful, and got 19 goals in the Championship last season for Burnley. Edozie on the other flank was lively, but has the touch of a drunk uncle at a sleep over.

Not sure why its Saintspool, after we "only" got:
R Lambert
N Clyne
A Lallana
D Lovren

P Crouch
S Mane

Southampton will know what they can afford in wages and how long they can hang onto players based on their league position.
they may fully expect someone to pay the 50 before the window shuts.
who knows, but the record of prem clubs is they largely stump up the asking price in the end so caving seems silly to me as well.
the issue for Southampton is they have to be better than 22 other championship sides and are in there racing Leeds, Leicester, Boro, Norwich and Blackburn who all want to have a go.
if the parachute payments can carry them through and they mean get back up then hanging on to both cms.might be ideal for them.

Very rarely works keeping an unhappy player, if I was him and my dream move to liverpool ended because my club was too greedy...I would kick up a fuss, whether they like it or not.
