Except against England I always support the other home nations.
But I know the same is not returned.

This is just my opinion but here's my explanation.

If you're English it's easy to support the rest of Britain as to all intents and purposes for many there's no difference between the two. Just think of all the "What it means to be British lists" and the majority, if not all, will be English based.

Whereas the rest of the UK countries strive to have their own identity so will rally against what they see as something which just confirms one country's dominion over others.

I'd be much more likely to want England to do well if we were all independent countries.

I think there's the same dynamic in most situations where you have a coloniser / colonised relationship or a dominant region that exercises power over neighbouring regions while not considering them to be equals.

I feel bad banging this drum to be honest as most English people I know are sound and England is a wonderful country in the main.

I know it's complex, and I have trouble explaining it myself sometimes, but I'd be much more open to lending my support to our neighbours if we were a bit removed from them.
