Bolton Wanderers 2 - 1 Derby County

BOLTON WANDERERS v DERBY COUNTY League1 #6

1500 Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bolton, Saturday 2nd Septembert 2023

A very enjoyable trip to Peterborough, with a very enjoyable win and an extremely enjoyable meet with the legend wot is Ang made for a very enjoyable day apart from the vagaries of driving round Leicester to get to the A47

It was good and the atmosphere was great but unfortuanately some seem to think this our start to strolling the league. Its not. We are still a WIP.

I am going to Bolton but have managed to cadge a ride on the farmers' bus departing from Ashbourne - I understand that both Vidal and Scouse will be in attendance.....

So, can I ask if you more sensible posters to keep us ticking over and Ang, you are on GGGGGGGGOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL duty unless I get my phone out first..... . Actually I have noticed that 2W, 6000 miles away is declaring the goals even before they have been scored......

Talking of attending, was anyone at the first meeting of Bolton/Derby on 8th Sept 1888, making this one of the, if not THE, oldest football league fixture ever? Oh, to have done a match thread.....

Bolton came out of the traps quickly but have since suffered a nasty 4-0 against Wigan followed by a 1-1 at Burton. Are they having a poor spell or is Saturday their regroup, re-organise time to sort it out?

And, back to work on Monday - already have colleagues trying to find RAAC........

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth, Hourihane (C), Waghorn, Mendez-Laing, Smith, Washington, Elder, Fornah, Rooney, Nelson.

Subs:- Vickers (GK), Cashin, Bradley, Barkhuizen, Collins, John-Jules, Radcliffe.

I notice that Hull are doing well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I watched the highlights of that match, Leicester appeared to be very unlucky to lose, but I am perhaps biased, as i am not keen on the way Liam Likes his teams to play out from the back.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't like too much messing about at the back and I don't like hoofball either. I think Liam is a far better manager than Warne, some of his substitutions and tactics are bat crazy. Why leave M-L on and why drop Cashin and why not put Smith to right back when Rooney got injured???

And most of all Sonny Bradley...WHY?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote from Warne re Cashin.
Somebody wanted to buy our player and it was continuing all over the day," he said.

"Everything kept moving and they were moving pieces. It looked like it was happening so he didn't travel with the team because if he had to do a medical it didn't make any logical sense.

"In the end when it failed, and it failed for different reasons above my paygrade, he drove over to the hotel and got here at 2am.

"He wasn't in any - in my opinion and it's only mine because I pick the team - emotional state prepared to play in the game. I didn't feel like it was right and that was my choice."

Everybody used to say he made one mistake a game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

To put Colin Todd and Sonnyboy in the same sentence is not very..................

Everybody said Toddy meade one mistake per season, not one mistake per game. But what's the use in comparing anyone to Todd, or McFarland? These are Gods of the game whose like we won't see again.

I can see why Cashin didn't play yesterday. I can see why he left NML on, though I would have subbed him. I can also see why he wanted Smith in midfield given the lack of options on the bench in that position. But I don't get the tactics. I can't understand why we aren't trying to dominate games, why Warne talked of Bolton as being a "possession-based" side, as if that was something that would be alien to what he wants to do. I'm all for giving Warne more time, I'm sure he and David Clowes know far more about what they are doing than I do, but at the moment I can't see where we are heading.

I feel the same Vidal, I don't think they will sack Warne because of the cost. I think most fans are disappointed how the team is set up to play and several of the new signings. I didn't go yesterday, I listened to RD, but Elder doesn't seem too good as well as the previous mentioned person.

Our club are a lot like a side I managed in a very lowly league. Players signed when mates brought them to a game and players playing out of position. We did however win our league and several cups, this is why I fell qualitied to comment on managers!!!

I thought Elder was OK yesterday to be fair. I would like to know what our captain makes of it all. He's doing his coaching badges and wants to make a career of it when he stops playing. Towards the end of the game, when Bolton sat in and defended their lead, Hourihane was getting on the ball, probing and moving the ball around. He looked energised. But the rest of the time the games pass him by and he wanders around waiting to see if we can get a set-piece that he can take. We need to get a player like him on the ball and see what he can do, not boot it long down the flanks. Warne mentioned post-match that the players didn't put their foot on the ball in the first half and weren't brave enough, but the way we set up makes this virtually impossible.

McFarland and Todd cannot cannot be compared to the current squad. Todd's fee as small as it was then, is larger than all the current squad now because they have been assembled for, nowt.

Fans don’t get you promoted.

We’ve been here one full season and played 6 games in this one. We’re 4 points off the top. No real need to worry yet. Thanks for your concern.

Apparently new footage shows the keeper did not handle outside the area.
If Derby's footage clearly shows that Wildsmith did not handle the ball, then he should be expected to be available against Pompey in just under two weeks time.

The match footage that everyone else has seen is pretty inconclusive from the angles, but there wasn't a major appeal from Charles - the player whose shot was alleged to have been handled - which could say a lot.

In the end though, the linesman and referee Breakspear came to a joint decision that made Wildsmith guilty, but if Derby feel as though they have the footage on their side for an appeal then you'd have to feel as thoguh they have a good chance of being successful.
