Manchester United have spent a record £1.19bn more on transfers over the past decade than they have recouped through player sales, according to a new study.
Since 2014 United have spent around £1.67bn on new players, and brought in around £481m, says Swiss-based research institute, CIES Football Observatory.
Chelsea are second with a negative net spend of £883m, followed by French side Paris St-Germain with £863m.
Arsenal (£745m) and Manchester City (£732m) complete the top five.

Glazers put the team before leaky toilets and roofs. They should be applauded for that.

You only have to look at what Madrid have just done to the Bernabeu to see why the Glazers aren't the best owners.
On the face of it we have spent stupid amounts on players (most of the time overpaying because of the club strategies in the market). But this merely masks the other areas that costs are cut around the club.
We paid 85 million for Antony when we could have got him for less than 60m earlier in the window, but the Glazers were hesitant to sign off. In the mean time Ajax sold other players and therefore didn't need to sell anymore. Same goes for Martinez and plenty of other signings. You can blame Murtough, Arnold and co. but they are employed by the Glazers and the Glazers have the final say.
We are definitely backed, but not always at the right times and it's most often reactionary rather than pro-active dealings.

Read this as ‘biggest waaankers’ at first. Thought it was going to be a ranking of all the waaankers that have played for the club. Would have been more interesting as well.

Would have taken too long too. 😂

Nothing new here. United have always spent far more than they've brought in from player sales. Not even sure why it's become so relevant in recent years.

Exactly my first thought. Even going back to SAF’s days we made very little on players sales until Ronaldo and Beckham skewed the stats.

Best and Giggs are one and two, obviously. Not sure outside of that, to be honest.

Can't say it doesn't feel pretty sweet. Not to mention five CL titles in the period analysed despite 12 Premier League clubs having a worse transfer balance.
Doesn't mean the club hasn't spent huge, wages being a huge elephant in the room in this discussion, but it does suggest that Madrid are far better run than a lot of people realise.

As a football club, absolutely.
