Southgate is now picking him because he's getting a tough time.

the usual twaddle from you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay he's picking him because he's been amazing at his club so far this season you stupid cant.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's picking him because he's done OK for England for the past 5 years, and we're not stacked with options at CB.
It isn't hard to work out

He’s done more than okay, he’s been England’s best defender and one of the best in international football.

Though there’s the argument for Kyle Walker.

i'm pretty sure - in fact, like you, i'm absolutely certain - that southgate only played phillips because pep had called him fat, and he wanted to show how inclusive the england team is.

The Netherlands men's team is captained by a lesbian. Beat that, Gareth.

He has been good in tournaments, it's not really up for debate.

People seem incapable of separating the Maguire that plays for United and the one that plays for England. And that’s why the criticism is ridiculous. I mean, ffs, he was getting booed by England fans because of his United form, despite being our best defender for years.

I love the fact that its taken the Scotland fans to rip the absolute hole out of Maguire before it's decided that enough is enough.
The guy shouldn't be getting picked for England, needs game time to get his confidence back, and then he can answer his critics on the pitch......it's as simple as that
This talk about separating his United form from his England form etc. is folly......him being picked while not playing is depriving other English CBs that are playing a place in the squad that they rightly deserve, and he's now scored an OG at Hampden too so his England form isn't exactly great either
Take him out the spotlight...will do him no end of good

Haven't read through the whole thread, but did anyone else see Brendan Rodgers' contribution to the debate?
From BBC Sport:
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who was briefly Maguire's boss at Leicester before his move to Manchester United in 2019, said the criticism of Maguire has "probably been created by his own club supporters and that has spilled out onto other supporters".
"It's sad where it was created from," he added. "I find it a real shame."

So it's all the fault of United fans?
